The pending move of the NBA's SACRAMENTO KINGS to ANAHEIM has prompted CBS RADIO Sports KHTK-A/SACRAMENTO's CARMICHAEL DAVE to try and raise money from fans on TWITTER to build a new arena in SACRAMENTO and keep the team in town.
After four hours of the impromptu campaign late TUESDAY night (3/29), DAVE, the producer of DON GERONIMO's midday show at KHTK. had raised $100,000 in TWITTER pledges to the "Here We Build" program, including over $25,000 from the local JIFFY LUBE franchisee; A "Here We Build" page for the campaign has also been established on FACEBOOK. "Why not us? A grassroots hero campaign by the fans to raise arena money with no red tape. A real life movie," DAVE tweeted just before midnight. "It's like being a part of something in real time. You just have to believe. Every comeback story starts somewhere!"
Every comeback story starts somewhere!
The likelihood of raising the funds necessary to build a replacement for POWER BALANCE PAVILION (formerly ARCO ARENA) is obviously extremely remote if not impossible, and the city of ANAHEIM's City Council approved $75 million in bonds TUESDAY to pay for necessary renovations and alterations to HONDA CENTER to accommodate the KINGS.
The team, which has seen attendance drop in recent years as it fell into the lower reaches of the NBA's Western Conference standings, has been attempting, and failing, for years to get SACRAMENTO to agree to build a new arena, and the financial difficulties of the MALOOF family, the team's owners, have prompted the talk of relocation to ORANGE COUNTY. KHTK is the longtime radio flagship for the franchise.
