At WEDNESDAY's RTNDA@NAB RADIO AND TELEVISION NEWS DIRECTORS FOUNDATION luncheon in LAS VEGAS, Homeland Security Secretary MICHAEL CHERTOFF pledged to launch an "embedded reporter" program during times of crisis like natural disasters to allow radio, TV, and print reporters to experience first-hand the government's relief efforts.
Admitting the agency's shortcomings during the KATRINA aftermath, CHERTOFF said "we’re not in a battleground, so we’re not going to be censoring information. What we don’t want is interference with our physical operations…On a day-to-day basis; it often looks like the media and government are squabbling with each other. But at the end of the day, we’re all on the same team."
