Whether you are an old dog or new pup; the radio business is full of new tricks and if you’re not willing and ready to learn them, you may just be treated to a full time position in the doghouse! Don’t be left out in the cold, make sure you're a part of the 2011 CONCLAVE COLLEGE, presented by ALL ACCESS and KNOWDIGITAL on FRIDAY JULY 15th starting at 2:30p in the PARK BALLROOM during THE 36th ANNUAL CONCLAVE LEARNING CONFERENCE in MINNEAPOLIS.
2:30p Great Expectations
Great Expectations must begin with Great Acceptations! Are you ready to accept an opportunity to discover what you need to know in order to land (or keep) that dream job? To meet expectations you must first introduce yourself to them. Learn what are the traits, skill, and experiences as managers who hire look for in filling their next job opening.
CLEAR CHANNEL SVP/Programming JON ZELLNER sais, "The role of an air talent has changed dramatically over the years. There was a time when jocks would come in, do their shift, do some production and go home. Now, every talent is responsible for growing their audiences digitally; so video blogs, social networking and updating their sites is crucial."
ZELLNER reveals the best ways to retain your job:
* Outperforming the rest of the station in your daypart
* Be valuable!
* Get involved in other facets of the station -- with sales, promotions, digital and marketing
* And the two fastest ways to lose your job: Negative Attitude and Living in the PastENTERCOMM COMMUNICATIONS/GREENVILLE, SC OM CHASE MURPHY encourages today’s radio personality to have a gambit of skills to survive. "We are no longer in a situation where you come in, do your show and bounce. You need to be able do a show (possibly several shows for different markets), blog, TWITTER, FACEBOOK, create unique online content, and possibly hold a title with responsibility and more."
Regarding landing the gig CHASE suggests, "I have found that the current generation of radio talent assumes that they are just there to answer the blitz of questions from the employer. Come prepared to ask questions that would impress or even challenge the interviewer. Everyone wants to hire smart people that can contribute to the team. Smart employers are looking for people to can eventually help them to do their job better."
When applying for the job CHASE advises:
* Do a great job of properly selling yourself.
* Produce a demo that represents who you are -- be yourself!3:30p Brilliant At The Basics -- Extended Play
Forget the fancy stuff -- being "Brilliant at the Basics" is the foundation for a successful radio station. SAGA COMMUNICATIONS EVP STEVE GOLDSTEIN shares his secrets from making the station and programmers excel at the key station building blocks.GOLDSTEIN said, "It’s not the number of things you do right that makes you #1, but the number of things you do wrong that prevent you from being #1. In radio we talk a lot about mastering multi-platform; whether it be streaming, TWITTER, FACEBOOK, Podcasting and while all of it is important, there is nothing more vital than what comes out of the speakers every minute of the day."
That’s the foundation to Brilliant at the Basics; a comprehensive session being offered for the first time in full length at the Conclave. This program has been in place for years at SAGA COMMUNICATIONS and it unlocks many of the "secrets" to SAGA's success and offers tips on the best ways to:
* Manage talent,
* Structure an hour,
* Win in PPM,
* Win in diary,
* Tease,
* Create compelling production.You'll learn about "successful station syndrome," which leads to destruction and more. And, of course, the basics of the basics: Music; Mornings; Information; and Promotions. Veteran PD DOUG DANIELS remarks, "I saw STEVE GOLDSTEIN's 'Brilliant at the Basics' presentation at THE CONCLAVE COLLEGE years ago and used that information to help score #1 25-54/Female numbers at WVAF/CHARLESTON; WGFB/ROCKFORD and KONA/TRI CITIES. A lot has changed in the ensuing years; it’s time for a refresher course."
3:30p Words That Win
We all sell something -- a music position, contest or advertising. In the "Words That Win" workshop, you'll learn from JEFFREY HEDQUIST, the voice that has flipped a billion burgers for MCDONALDS, adding spare tires to AMERICA's waist-line, and sold millions of new tires for GOODYEAR and people movers for FORD; all dramatic advertiser results achieved by and through the winning techniques of storytelling, emotion, empathy, surprise, and word choice. You'll get tools to grab the attention of the listener and make your messages more successful.HEDQUIST said, "I’ve been called 'the 17% consultant' because I help broadcasters improve the approximately 17% of each hour dedicated to commercials. If you make those commercials more entertaining, more captivating and more relevant to your listeners you’ll increase TSL. So, improving commercials is a powerful programming technique."
Whether you’re a PD, air personality, promotions or production director, copywriter or account executive, you’ll want to experience THE CONCLAVE's "Words That Win" seminar, in the Terrace 1 room, with the animated and award winning (712 and counting!) * Budgeting

* Why a PD is part of the sales department and why ratings DO matter!RON HARRELL, who is in the unique position of PD and GM at CLEAR CHANNEL/DETROIT suggests, "If the PD's job is to execute and guide the product, then he/she should have an understanding of how the organism works. HARRELL will cover why a PD should:
* Understand the enormity of the GM’s job, but not be weak

* Pursue the interests of your station.CLEAR CHANNEL/MINNEAPOLIS Pres./Market Mgr. MIKE CRUSHAM confesses, "I have a wrist band similar to those worn by NFL Quarterbacks where they have the plays written, except my wrist band is filled with 45 acronyms that we need to know to navigate through a business day.
