The FCC has extended the deadline for comments in the Low Power FM-FM translator proceeding due to the disruption from Hurricane IRENE. Comments, originally due TODAY (8/29), are now due SEPTEMBER 6th, with replies due SEPTEMBER 20th.
The Third Further Notice of Proposed Rule Making would lift the translator application freeze (instituted in 2007) in smaller markets but would lead to the dismissal of pending translator applications in markets with limited available space for new LPFM stations. The Commission also is asking for comment on, among other things, opening an LPFM application window no later than SUMMER 2012, adding rules that would reserve more spectrum for LPFM over translators, and restricting trafficking of translator construction permits.
