ILLINOIS BIBLE INSTITUTE Contemporary Christian WCIC/PEORIA, IL is partnering with listeners this school year to make a difference in the lives of children that need a positive adult influence.
The station asked for 100 volunteers to give one hour per month as a lunchtime mentor with a child chosen by school officials at one of two local schools, CHARTER OAK ELEMENTARY or MARK BILLS MIDDLE SCHOOL, for the 2011-2011 school year. At the close of the invitation, more than 100 men and women volunteered via the station's website.
A pilot program took place during the last school year and a total of 63 people responded. Some of last year’s mentors have returned to continue meeting with their student this school year and are not counted among the new mentors.
The mentors will be assigned to a student by school officials and asked to visit the child at school during the lunch hour twice per month. The mentors will eat with their assigned students and spend time talking with them.
JOHN WETTERAUER, Principal of CHARTER OAK SCHOOL, said those students who met regularly with their mentors last school year ended the year suspension free.
