CLEAR CHANNEL CEO MARK MAYS tells REUTERS that he expects HD RADIO to take off once the receivers decline in price and show up in cars, iPods, and mobile phones.
"As we look at HD," MAYS says in an interview conducted earluer this week, "clearly we're looking for distribution in all outlets, whether it's in a Macintosh computer, iPod or CHEVROLET driving down the highway. We're looking for opportunities to get as many HD receivers out there as possible.... All you have to do is get the price point down to $99. Once you dip below the $100 price point, boom. I'd expect to see a $99 HD receiver in 12 to 18 months."
Looking at radio's future, MAYS says that he is "a big long-term believer in radio and as you look at that, its not just radio in the traditional sense. It's HD radio, podcasting and other opportunities. You have to move beyond the traditional AM and FM dial. We have enormous ways to take content and monetize it."
