AMERICAN UNIVERSITY noncommercial News-Talk WAMU/WASHINGTON Senior Commentator FRED FISKE retires TODAY (9/27) on the 64th anniversary of his arrival in WASHINGTON radio. FISKE's last commentary, aired YESTERDAY (9/26), notes that the day is also the anniversary of the Castle Mission of WORLD WAR II, in which he crash-landed in FRANCE and for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Starting at WOL-A, WWDC-A/WASHINGTON, and MUTUAL, FISKE was an announcer and DJ, then launched what he called the only talk show in WASHINGTON at the time, on WWDC, later moving to WAMU in 1977. He reduced his workload to commentaries after his wife fell ill in 1991.
