HAMPTONS COMMUNITY RADIO noncommercial WEER (EAST END RADIO)/MONTAUK, NY has posted a message on its website threatening to "say goodbye" without additional benefactor support and looking for local business owners to provide "urgently needed funding."
The message reads, "Sadly, WEER must say good bye. WEER has told you over the last several months that WEER has been struggling. We finally found a grant writer to work with but it’s too late. We’ve tried to explain that the only way WEER could survive was with community support -- especially in the way of benefactors. We have been unsuccessful in getting that kind of support. We have worked hard to accomplish our mission -- to that end we were succeeding. But without benefactor and down-the-line grant support and the support of businesses and the community, WEER has to say goodbye. To those of you who have supported us we can only tell you how grateful we are and how much your support has meant to us ... we can only say, 'Thank you.' It is with much sadness that WEER admits even though we still believe in our mission of aiding our wonderful local non-profit organizations but unless there is a last-minute benefactor ... WEER must say goodbye."
The message is followed by a thank-you to ISLAND GROUP ADMINISTRATION of EAST HAMPTON for a contribution that allowed operation for the last two months and a plea for 11 businesses to match that contribution once a year to cover the station's basic $4,000 monthly tower and transmitter costs.
