CBS RADIO Sports WBZ-F (98.5 THE SPORTS HUB)/BOSTON afternoon team MIKE FELGER and TONY MASSAROTTI were in the midst of once again ripping the BOSTON RED SOX for their now-infamous late-season collapse and subsequent controversies on FRIDAY afternoon when RED SOX owner JOHN HENRY, who had been listening in his car, showed up at the studio and asked to come on the air live to address the hosts' comments.
The result was an impromptu and raw interview that hit every topic from manager TERRY FRANCONA's dismissal and treatment (with talk about marital problems and pain medication that some believe originated with SOX management) to THEO EPSTEIN's exit and the BOSTON GLOBE's revelations of turmoil on the team.
The hosts and HENRY went toe-to-toe for a 70-minute in-studio interview, including HENRY defending his players, denying he pushed EPSTEIN out ("I would have loved for THEO to be our GM for the next 20 years") but saying that he did not support EPSTEIN's controversial free agent signing of CARL CRAWFORD, asserting that his ownership of the English PREMIER LEAGUE's LIVERPOOL F.C. and part of ROUSH RACING does not take away from his interest in the SOX, Pres./CEO LARRY LUCCHINO's status as his contract comes to an end (HENRY said that the sides are not presently negotiating but he expects LUCCHINO to remain with the team), discussing how LEBRON JAMES' part-ownership in LIVERPOOL plays in BOSTON, and insisting that the chaotic image surrounding the team in recent weeks is "much more external than internal. The RED SOX aren't in ashes."
"I just came here to help your ratings," HENRY joked.
