Longtime L.A. radio icon JIM LADD, who was cut loose by KLOS/LOS ANGELES last week (NET NEWS, 10/26), took some parting shots at corporate radio in an L.A. TIMES interview. "I'll come through this," he said of his sudden exit, "but it still hits you in the gut."
LADD recognizes that his free-form radio show, where he picks the music, is a very rare exception to the rule in commercial radio. "There's no room for, or understanding of, what I do on the air," he said. "They want a tight format, but that's not what rock 'n' roll is all about. Rock 'n' roll is about freedom ... Radio should be ashamed ... that TV is now hipper [to new music] than rock radio is."
You can hear LADD do a farewell show on CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI-A/LOS ANGELES on SATURDAY, NOV. 5th at 4p, where he'll take calls from listeners and special guests for three hours (NET NEWS, 10/31). Meanwhile, LADD is reported to be "sorting through job offers with input from his wife, HELENE, and his manager."
