Cell phone text messaging is rapidly growing with 74% of the 25,000 respondents at Rock format stations indicating they do text messaging, according to JACOBS MEDIA’s TECHNOLOGY WEB POLL II. The Internet study was conducted in in late-FEBRUARY with 79 different Mainstream Rock, Classic Rock, and Alternative stations.
Contests, concert information, and traffic were the top 3 perferred text messages. Findings from the study include:
35% text message weekly
22% text message daily, especially Alternative music listeners and 18-29 year-olds
40% don’t have a preference on sending or receiving text messages from stations
26% who text at least monthly prefer not to communicate with a station via texting.
JACOBS MEDIA President FRED JACOBS points out,"Texting presents a great way for Alternative and Active Rock stations to get to the hardest-to-reach demographics for ARBITRON and many advertisers 18-29. They’re more open to sending and/or receiving text messages from the stations they use. That translates to better communication and revenue opportunities for stations."
