Syndicated THE BERT SHOW received a special phone call, as First Lady MICHELLE OBAMA and former President BILL CLINTON called into the show and congratulated the station on the success of The Big Thank You, where BERT SHOW listeners hand-wrote a thank-you letter to each and every soldier serving overseas. Originally striving to bring in 400,000 letters for each deployed or stationed U.S soldier, the count is now at more than 650,000 letters with more coming in every day.
"I just had to call you guys when I heard about your Big Thank You campaign because this is exactly the kind of outreach and activity that we love to see that means so much to our men and women in uniform," OBAMA said. "The fact that you set, which was a phenomenal goal of sending 400,000 letters to our men and women serving overseas, but that you then exceeded that, and have over 600,000 letters written, that is truly amazing and that’s the reason why I had to just call in and thank your team and your listeners for stepping up over the holidays. I have had the privilege of meeting with so many men and women in uniform and their families. It really means so much to them, these small gestures ... These letters are going to make the world different."
President CLINTON also made a surprise call in to THE BERT SHOW during his visit to ATLANTA to discuss how he felt when he took office, his feeling on OCCUPY WALL STREET and his sentiments on The Big Thank You.
"I hope this letter writing campaign you organized will get those half-million people and people that they come in contact with to think about what else we can do to help those young people when they come home because they are not just heroes, they are an incredible resource for America’s future," CLINTON said. "We owe them a lot, and if we do what we should, in terms of health and education and job placement, they will pay it back many times over."
"Everyone should be proud of themselves," OBAMA added. "It is my great honor to be able to call you guys and congratulate you on such a big effort. Just keep it going, and again, congratulations. You all have a reason to celebrate."
