Condolences to family, friends, and fans of Country artist BILLY WALKER, who died in a car accident in ALABAMA on SUNDAY. WALKER, 77, was one of four killed when their van ran off I-65 in HAYNEVILLE, south of MONTGOMERY; WALKER's wife BETTE and band members CHARLES LILLY and DANIEL PATTON also died in the wreck, which occurred as the group was returning to NASHVILLE from an appearance in GULF SHORES, AL. The WALKERS' grandson JOSHUA BROOKS is in critical condition in a local hospital.
WALKER joined the GRAND OLE OPRY in 1960 and had hits with songs like "Charlie's Shoes," "Heart, Be Careful," "Cross the Brazos at Waco," and "The Morning Paper." Country legend has it that WALKER missed being on the plane that crashed and killed PATSY CLINE, HAWKSHAW HAWKINS, and COWBOY COPAS when HAWKINS gave WALKER his ticket for an earlier flight and flew on CLINE's private plane instead.
