1) How did you get your start in radio?
My love affair with radio began when I was seven years old. My Dad bought me a microphone to help me with my vocabulary (by the way, it didn't work). I ended up doing play-by-play of Atlanta Braves games. The rest is history.
2) What are you passionate about?
I don't think of myself as a passionate person. I've never been described as a passionate person. I enjoy getting the job done the right way.
3) Without major league sports in Alabama, what are the hot topics in your market- is it all-Crimson Tide or Auburn, all the time? Is there any interest in baseball or basketball, or is it all college football and NASCAR?
52 weeks out of the year you can talk Alabama Football. Past, present, and future, one could talk Crimson Tide all the time, but then my head would explode. There is a decent fan base of the Tennessee Titans, as well as the Atlanta Braves; that keeps us all sane.
4) You've done some basketball play-by-play, hosted a daily talk show- what's your dream job (other than, of course, your present one)? Pro play-by-play? Major market sports talk? Sports Illustrated columnist?
I want to be a play-by-play guy for a Division I or II college. I know I'm good at. It's all about timing. It's all about right place at the right time..
5) What do you do for show prep?
Read as many papers and magazines as I can. If I don't read at least seven papers before my show I feel so unprepared. I read most of the major papers in Alabama as well as Atlanta and Nashville.
6) What's the best moment you've ever experienced in sports? In radio?
Over a four-year period I was the play-by-play voice of The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Men's Basketball Team. In 2003 They made the Division II Men's Basketball Tournament. Our first round game was in Orlando, FL against the Tars of Rollins. When I arrived I found that my position to do the game was basically the front row of their student section. Every time I got excited things were thrown at me. UAH ended up losing to Rollins but it was an experience I'll never forget.
7) Of what are you most proud?
Sticking to my dream. Believing that I am good enough to be in the game but being damn good at it.
8) What do you do for fun?
I love to play golf, ride my bike, working out, riding roller coasters, and spending time with my family.
9) Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________________.
......watching Family Guy or The Daily Show. (Whose leg do you have to hump to get a dry martini around here?)
10) What's the best advice you've ever gotten? The worst?
I've had some great teachers. I'd like to thank Royal T. Marshall, Scott Slade, Mike Kavanagh, Charles Youngs, Todd Mark, Greg Moceri, Matt Edgar, Steak Shapiro, and Brian Black. They have all taught me well. They all taught me about quality of your product and how important it is. And because of how it reflects on you professionally. The worst? What sells is more important than anything else.
