NEW YORK: Z Storms Back
As the final vestiges of the mistletoe and holly fade into the mist, we find the ratings landscape returned to its previous and upright positions. CCM+E AC WLTW (LITE FM) continued to run roughshod over the market (11.3-7.2) with a number that was almost precisely equal to its post-HOLIDAY meltdown from last year. CBS RADIO Classic Hits WCBS-F was down for the second straight book (6.6-6.2), but still held on to the #2 spot for the sixth book in a row. YMF MEDIA Urban AC WBLS is also on a two-book downtrend (5.9-5.7) but maintained its vise-like grip on #3 for the sixth straight month. Meanwhile, CCM+E Top 40/M WHTZ (Z100) bounced back from its lowest book in over a year with a sturdy performance (4.6-5.4), yet still found itself at #4 for the third consecutive book. SBS Tropical WSKQ (LA MEGA) was flat (4.5-4.5) to remain at #5, in a flat-footed tie with CBS RADIO News WINS-A, which was under the influence of a two-book surge (4.2-4.5). While the GIANTS fought vainly to avoid the NFL Playoffs, interest in their plight drove CBS RADIO Sports WFAN to its best book in over a year (3.1-3.7) and landed the station at #10.
WLTW proved -- once again -- it doesn’t need no stinkin’ CHRISTMAS music to be #1 25-54 as the station posted the exact same après-SANTA number it did last year. WHTZ’s good fortune continued as it rose from #5 to #2 -- a full share point ahead of last year’s pace. Despite adding a bit to its ratings portfolio, WBLS slipped from a tie at #2 to #3. WSKQ remained flat but also fell from a tie at #2 to #4. WCBS-F was down slightly and this caused the station to slip from #4 to #5. Further down the list, CUMULUS Hot AC WPLJ continued its recent roller-coaster ratings ride, this time climbing up the charts with its best book since AUGUST, which moved it from #13 to #10.
Ladies and gentlemen, SANTA has left the building ... which means WHTZ returned to its customary spot atop the 18-34 heap. While WLTW did fall back to #2 due to Christmas deflation, the station is still two and a half share points above where it was a year ago. UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary WXNY (X96.3) moved up a spot to #3 despite a down book, while EMMIS Top 40/R WQHT (HOT) also took a ratings hit but moved from #5 to a tie at #4. They are not alone as CCM+E Urban WWPR (POWER) jumped up a couple of spots from #6.Last year, after the CHRISTMAS departure, WHTZ was still #2 18-49 behind WLTW. Not this year as Z100 posted its best book since OCTOBER while LITE returned to its normal, albeit powerful, ratings range. WSKQ was off for the second straight book and fell to #3. Two stations are arm wrasslin’ at #4 after experiencing some slight downward momentum – CCM+E Top 40/M WKTU and WXNY.
LOS ANGELES: This Kiss -- Unstoppable
For the last two months the power of ST. NICK was all that separated CCM+E Top 40/M KIIS (KISS FM) from its recently rightful place on top of L.A.’s ratings mountain. The station just posted its largest number in over a year (5.5-5.7) -- more than a share stronger than at this point a year ago. Cluster confederate CCM+E Hot AC KBIG (MY FM) also scored its best book in over a year (4.8-5.4) to move up a spot to #2 -- well ahead of its pace from last year. Alas, all good things must end, and CCM+E AC KOST saw its CHRISTMAS bulge diminish significantly (10.2-5.3) as it slid to #3, though still a half-point stronger than last year. Two stations became entangled at #4. CCM+E Talk KFI-A bounced back from its lowest book in over a year (3.7-4.0) while CBS RADIO Classic Hits KRTH (KEARTH) rebounded from its lowest total since MARCH (3.5-4.0). What the elves giveth, the elves taketh away as CBS RADIO Smooth Jazz KTWV (THE WAVE) -- the market’s "other" all-CHRISTMAS station -- fell from #4 to a tie at #14 (4.0-2.8).
Way back in NOVEMBER, KBIG was the #1 station 25-54. Then, all this holiday music came in and changed people’s listening behavior. With normal patterns re-emerging, the station posted its best number in over a year to return to the top spot. Cluster compadre KIIS slid up to #2, a much stronger station in this demo than it was a year ago -- to the tune of a share-and-a-half. KOST’s CHRISTMAS hangover continued as it slid to #3 with the exact same post-HOLIDAY rating as last year’s. CBS RADIO Alternative KROQ was a share better than last year and held on at #4. As recently as NOVEMBER, UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits KRCD (RECUERDO) was ranked at #15 but its recent three-book surge placed the station at #5. KTWV’s holiday high came crashing down as it fell from #12 to #20.
Several stations posted huge numbers 18-34. KIIS was #1 with its best book in over a year -- over two shares better than last year’s. EMMIS Top 40/R KPWR (POWER) had its best book since AUGUST to move up a spot to #2, while KBIG continued its recent strong showings and moved up one to #3. CBS RADIO Top 40/M KAMP (AMP) had its best book since JULY to move up to #4 while KROQ took sole possession of #5. KOST came back to earth a bit, sliding from #2 to #6 -- still a much stronger position than last JANUARY.
KIIS shrugged off that wacky CHRISTMAS-influenced month to return to #1 18-49, posting its best book in over a year -- almost two shares better than last JANUARY. KBIG also had its highest rating in over a year, which moved it up a notch to #2. KPWR reversed a two-book slide to move up a slot to #3. The CHRISTMAS retreat continued for KOST as it slid from #1 to a tie at #4 with KROQ, which had its best book since OCTOBER.
CHICAGO: All Shook Up
Take away all that CHRISTMAS spirit and the ratings picture in CHICAGO was like a snow globe. A year ago, CCM+E Urban AC WVAZ (V103) was #4 with a 4.4 share. Now, it seems poised to start another run on top as it moved up from #2 (6.1-6.2) with its best book since SEPTEMBER. Despite its third straight down book, CBS RADIO News WBBM-A managed to move from #3 to #2 (5.0-4.9). HUBBARD Hot AC WTMX (MIX) scored its highest number since last JUNE (3.9-4.8) to rocket from a tie at #5 to #3. Holding steady at #4 was TRIBUNE N/T WGN-A (4.2-4.5). Last month, CBS RADIO Country WUSN (US 99.5) was licking its wounds after posting its lowest number in over a year. That injury healed quickly as the station pole-vaulted from a tie at #10 to #5 (3.4-4.0). The rapid descent of CCM+E AC WLIT (LITE FM) was one of the most dramatic post-CHRISTMAS declines we have seen. The station plunged from #1 to a tie at #13 (10.0-3.2).
Last month, with all that holiday brouhaha, WTMX matched its lowest 25-54 total of the year and was tied at #3. This month, the station scored its highest number in over a year to reclaim the top spot with a vengeance. WVAZ remained firmly wedged in at #2. UNIVISION Regional Mexican WOJO (LA QUE BUENA) had its lowest book since AUGUST, but held on to a share of #3 along with the hard chargin’ WUSN, which leapt all the way from #12. HUBBARD Classic Hits WDRV (THE DRIVE) shook off its lowest number in over a year and took the HOV lanes from #10 to #5. The plunge continued here for WLIT, which free-fell from #1 to #14 -- scoring the exact same number it had in the month leading up to its all-cHRISTMAS adventure.
Even though SANTA had considerable sway in the last book, CCM+E Regional Mexican WNUA (EL PATRON) held a share of the top spot 18-34. Now, the station was all alone at #1. Cluster companion CCM+E Urban WGCI bounced back to move up a spot to #2, while WUSN continued its impressive showing by moving from a tie at #8 to #3. WTMX, also on the road to recovery, jumped from #7 to #4, while CCM+E Top 40/M WKSC (KISS FM) slipped a bit to #5. WLIT’s CHRISTMAS detox was in full swing as the station took the down elevator from a tie at #1 to a tie at #20.
WTMX announced its 18-49 presence with authority as it returned to #1 with its highest number in over a year. For the third book in a row, WNUA had a positive ratings experience and moved up a spot to #2. WVAZ scored its highest number in over a year and was rewarded with a two-slot rise to #3. WGCI edged up from a tie at #5 to complete ownership of #4. WKSC was given its lowest number in over a year and slid into a tie at #5 with the rebounding WUSN, which jumped up from #9. Once again, post-holiday blues hit WLIT hard as it tumbled from #1 to #18.
