Welcome to bonus coverage of the MAY 2014 survey. The Ratings Experts at RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC. have used this stoppage time to delve into the recalibrated LOS ANGELES data. If you haven’t heard, the release of L.A.’s MAY data was delayed by a week and ultimately two households were removed from the sample – one that didn’t meet NIELSEN’s quality standards, and the other that was found to be affiliated with KSCA. Before we expose you to information overload, we invite you to view the following statement from the folks at NIELSEN AUDIO:
"Both households had been installed for an extended period, prior to the closing of the ARBITRON acquisition last fall. NIELSEN will conduct an official impact analysis extending back over the last year and will provide the market with this analysis.
As a reminder, the MAY survey covered the real world dates of 4/24-5/21." Now, on with the show …LOS ANGELES: The Earth Moved
Despite all the brouhaha, one thing remained constant. CCM+E Top 40/M KIIS (KISS) was #1 for the fourth book in a row, even though the station was flat (5.3-5.3). The big shake-up came courtesy of CBS RADIO Classic Hits KRTH (K-EARTH). The station continued its recent resurgence by posting its highest share in over a year (4.7-5.1) to move up one spot to #2. This forced CCM+E Hot AC KBIG (MY FM) to take one small step backward to #3 as it scored its lowest number in over a year (4.9-4.8). This marked the third straight book the station failed to crack a 5 share. EMMIS Top 40/R KPWR (POWER) lost a bit of juice with its smallest share since JANUARY (4.7-4.4) as it slipped back to #4. CCM+E AC KOST remained in place at #5 as it also saw a low number (4.5-4.2) – the lowest since NOVEMBER. UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary KLVE (K-LOVE) had its highest share in over a year (3.6-4.1) to move forward one square to #6. This was also the first time the station has cracked a 4 share in the last 14 books. CBS RADIO Top 40/M KAMP (AMP) was down for the third straight book. It slipped a spot to #7 with its tiniest output in over a year (4.0-3.8). Cluster bro’ CBS RADIO Alternative KROQ was flat (3.1-3.1) – matching its lowest share of the last year – yet managed to move up a spot to #8. Two stations were locked in arms at #9. CBS RADIO Adult Hits KCBS-F (JACK) slid from #8 (3.2-3.0) while CBS RADIO News KNX-A inched up from a tie at #10 (2.9-3.0). UNIVISION Regional Mexican KSCA was up slightly (2.8-2.9) and was rewarded with a one-step move to #11.
For the last 14 surveys, the 25-54 trophy has resided in one cluster’s case. Three stations have taken turns engraving their names on it. The guard changed this book as KIIS – even though it posted its lowest score since KOST was in the giving spirit – regained the top spot. KBIG slid back to #2 as it again landed its lowest share in over a year. KPWR was flat and remained at #3 while KLVE again popped its biggest number in over a year to move forward three paces to #4. This was the station’s first appearance in the top five in the last 14 books. KROQ was again flat and happy to remain at #5. The ground did not move much for KRTH. Though the station moved forward two spots to #6, it experienced minimal share gain. KSCA remained at #10 with a slight loss of share.
The rank order 18-34 remained intact, only the numbers were changed to protect the innocent – JOE FRIDAY would be proud. As a matter of fact, the top four stations all lost share. KPWR was #1 for the fourth straight survey while KIIS notched its fourth straight month in the secondary position. KBIG remained at #3 but was down for the fourth consecutive month. As with the previous two demos, it had its lowest number in over a year. Despite its lowest number in over a year, KAMP remained camped out at #4. KROQ actually ended a three-book slide as it remained anchored at #5. Apparently, those CAROLE KING records helped as KRTH moved up a spot to #6 with easily its best book in over a year. KSCA scored its highest number in exactly one year and was given a two-slot increase to #7 as a result.
Not much change in the natural order of things atop the 18-49 leaderboard, though the leaders all lost share. KIIS was off slightly but remained on top for the second straight book while KPWR continued at #2 despite its own share loss. KBIG completed the sweep and again secured its lowest book in over a year to remain at #3. KROQ was flat but moved up to #4 while KAMP stepped aside to #5 with its smallest share in over a year. Once again, KLVE had its biggest number in over a year to move up a spot to #6. KRTH was equally as prosperous in moving up three spots to #7. KSCA remained at #9 though it did have its best showing since AUGUST.
This concludes our initial review of the LOS ANGELES numbers. We will return with a special analysis on THURSDAY comparing the old APRIL with the new.
