Just when you thought it was safe to resume browsing, the Ratings Experts from RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC. return with another round of ratings analysis. Of course, we do not shoulder this burden alone as the fact finders from XTRENDS provide the backstory. This one focuses on MAY – a time of graduations, Mother’s Day guilt fests and loads of rain. That’s what you get when a survey covers 4/21 through 5/18. And now, on with the show...
Detroit: The Tigers Beat
Though the local baseball nine may be mired in fourth place in their division, their flagship station was #1 6+ for the second consecutive survey. CBS RADIO Sports WXYT-F (THE TICKET) had its best offensive performance since AUGUST (6.5-7.3). Two stations had down books yet managed to move up and into a tie at #2. CBS RADIO Classic Hits WOMC rose from #3 (6.1-5.7) while GREATER MEDIA Classic Rock WCSX advanced from #4 (6.0-5.7). GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WRIF was completely flat yet took two steps forward to #4 (5.6-5.6). CBS RADIO Country WYCD had its best performance since JULY and jumped five spots to #5 (4.3-5.3). It met up with CUMULUS Talk WJR-A, which fell from #2 with its lowest share since we were at some party hop (6.2-5.3). CBS RADIO News WWJ-A had its lowest share in over a year (5.7-5.2) and fell two places to a tie at #7.
So, all WRIF did was post its lowest 25-54 score since DECEMBER. No problem. The station was #1 for the fifth book in a row and maintained its commanding lead over #2 WXYT-F, which was up slightly. iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M WKQI (CHANNEL 955) moved up a spot to #3. Over the last four books, the station has been yo-yoing between the same set of numbers. It was on the positive side this time. WYCD landed its largest share in over a year to climb four places to #4. The last time the station was ranked this high in this demo was in OCTOBER. On the other hand, WCSX had its lowest total in over a year and it dropped to #5. iHEARTMEDIA Urban WJLB was off slightly but enough to move the station back two squares to #6.
Missed it by that much. That’s what they could have been saying at WRIF as the station almost made it five straight double-digit 18-34 books in a row. Again, it was not a problem as it cruised to another #1 win. WKQI remained #2 but was down for the third book in a row. WJLB had a small increase and maintained its #3 ranking. Once again WYCD had its best book in over a year as it rose from a tie at #10 to #4. WGPR INC. Urban AC WGPR (HOT) had its lowest share since JULY as it stepped back to #5. #6 CBS RADIO Top 40/M WDZH (AMP) fell out of the top five for the first time this year as it suffered with a down book.
There wasn’t much to see 18-49 as the top four stations remained unchanged. WRIF was its usual dominant self at #1 despite its lowest share since JULY. WKQI was up slightly at #2 while WJLB was flat at #3. WCSX was off slightly but held firm at #4. There was one bit of drama as WYCD used another best-book-in-over-a-year to jump seven places to #5. WXYT-F was up slightly but still stepped aside for its teammate and dropped to #6.
Miami-Ft.Lauderdale-Hollywood: The Song Remains The Same
There was zero drama in the 6+ race this survey as the top five stations remained unchanged for, well, the third book in a row. ENTERCOM AC WLYF (LITE) was #1 for the fourth straight survey (8.7-8.2) while COX RADIO Urban AC WHQT (HOT) came in at #2 once again (7.5-7.7). COX RADIO AC WFEZ (EASY) was #3 (6.5-6.3) and UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary WAMR (AMOR) repeated its #4 performance (5.6-5.7). Rounding out the quintet was COX RADIO Urban WEDR (99JAMZ) at #5 (4.9-5.0). SBS Tropical WXDJ (EL ZOL) made a valiant effort to crack the first division with its best book in over a year but, alas, just came up short at #6 (4.6-4.9).
For the eighth consecutive survey, WHQT was #1 25-54. However, it was forced to share the title this time with WLYF, which moved up thanks to its highest score in over a year. WEDR was flat and steady at #3. WXDJ moved up to #4 with its best showing since the HOLIDAY book while WAMR used a slight increase to propel itself forward two places to #5. WFEZ had its lowest share since DECEMBER and slid two slots to #6.
That WEDR was #1 18-34 again came as no surprise. That’s what it does. However, it is worth noting that the station was in double digits for the third book in a row. WLYF moved up to #2 with its highest share since OCTOBER. iHEARTMEDIA Urban WMIB (THE BEAT) was off slightly as it stepped back to #3. WHQT remained at #4 but with its lowest score since DECEMBER. iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M WHYI (Y100) was steady at #5 despite posting its lowest number in over a year.
The top five 18-49 were relatively unaltered from a month ago. WLYF was #1 with its best book in over a year while #2 WEDR was off slightly. WHQT was also off slightly at #3. WMIB remained at #4 with a flat performance but was joined by WXDJ, which took one step up with its best showing so far this year. WFEZ dropped three places to #8 with its lowest score since DECEMBER.
Seattle-Tacoma: Movin’ And Groovin’
While that may not be the official station slogan, it could describe the feeling within the halls of HUBBARD Top 40/M KQMV (MOVIN), which landed its fifth straight 6+ win (6.0-6.2). However, the station may be hearing footsteps as #2 iHEARTMEDIA Classic Hits KJR-F (THE JET) had its best book since SEPTEMBER (5.8-6.1) to narrow the gap to the slimmest of margins. The two #3 stations from last month went their separate ways. BONNEVILLE Talk KIRO-F remained in place (5.0-4.9) while CBS RADIO Classic Rock KZOK moved back to #4 (5.0-4.8). This time, three stations were jammed up at #5. HUBBARD AC KRWM (WARM) remained in place but with a somewhat tepid showing (4.9-4.4) – its coolest since OCTOBER. UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON N/T KUOW moved up from #7 with its best showing since JUNE (4.2-4.4). ENTERCOM Active Rock KISW was up from #8 as it ended a two-book slide (4.1-4.4). Baseball was very, very good to BONNEVILLE Sports KIRO-A as the station rose from #20 to a tie at #10 (2.5-3.4).
In what is destined to be the central theme of this market, KQMV was #1 25-54 for the fifth book in a row. The station did post its lowest total in over a year but managed to keep a solid lead over KISW, which moved up to #2 as it ended a three-book slide. ENTERCOM Rhythmic AC KHTP (HOT) moved up one spot to #3 with its best performance in over a year. KJR-F dropped back a couple of places to #4 as it lost a chunk of share. The MARINERS-fueled KIRO-A had its highest run total since OCTOBER and jumped ten places to #5. CRISTA Christian Contemporary KCMS (SPIRIT) slid back to #6 where it was partnered with ENTERCOM Alternative KNDD (THE END), which moved up from a tie at #9.
Yes, KQMV was down 18-34 for the third straight survey. And, yes, the station posted its lowest number since AUGUST. Still, the station was #1 for the fifth book in a row. However, the race became, well, a race, as the next two stations had their best performances in over a year. KJR-F was oh so close to winning as it became the sole occupant of the #2 slot, and KHTP was a hair behind as it rose to #3. KISW fell to #4 with its lowest total in over a year while KNDD was off slightly but steady at #5.
Three of the top four stations 18-49 were flat and unmoved from last month. KQMV was #1 for – naturally – the fifth book in a row while KISW maintained its #2 pace of being a share and a half behind. KJR-F was steady at #3 but was forced to share with KHTP, which moved up a spot with its best book in over a year. KNDD was off slightly but stable at #5. iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KPWK (POWER) ended a two-book slide as it rose from #11 to #6 where it was in league with SINCLAIR Hot AC KPLZ (STAR), which was off slightly.
Phoenix: EZ Does It (Once Again)
The Rich just seem to get richer. iHEARTMEDIA AC KESZ (99.9KEZ) was #1 6+, of course, but had its best BURL IVES-less month in over a year (7.7-8.1). HUBBARD Classic Rock KSLX had its best showing in over a year (6.5-6.9) but still trailed the leader by more than a share. CBS RADIO Classic Hits KOOL was up for the second book in a row (5.3-6.0) to advance two squares to #3. HUBBARD Active Rock KUPD slid a spot to #4 (5.7-5.6) while iHEARTMEDIA Hot AC KMXP (MIX) dropped back to #5 (5.4-5.1). It was a good month to be playing country music as both stations had solid gains. CBS RADIO Country KMLE moved up four places to #6 with its best performance in over a year (4.0-4.9). iHEARTMEDIA Country KNIX had its highest mark since DECEMBER to move from #13 to #7 (3.6-4.3).
A Rock-flavored playlist was the way to go 25-54. KUPD was #1 for the fifth book in a row and KSLX solidified its hold on the #2 position with its best outing in over year. KMXP also had its highest share in over a year as it moved up to a very close #3. KESZ was up slightly but fell back to #4. As with the previous demo, KMLE had its highest total in over a year and moved up three slots to #5. KOOL advanced four squares to #6 with its best book since NOVEMBER. iHEARTMEDIA Adult Hits KYOT (THE MOUNTAIN) … not to be confused with his brother, The Hound … had its lowest score in over a year as it fell four places to a tie at #8.
Last month, CBS RADIO Top 40/M KZON (LIVE 101.5) was the talk of the town 18-34. It had just culminated a steep three-book climb with a massive share. This time the bubble burst a bit. The station remained #1 for the third straight survey but was forced into a tie by KESZ, which moved up from #5 as it ended a four-book slide. iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KZZP (KISS) was flat but moved up to #3 while KMXP dropped back to #4 with a modest decrease. RIVIERA Top 40/R KKFR (POWER) fell three places to #5 with its lowest share of the year. FARMWORKER Regional Mexican KNAI ended a three-book slide in style as it rose from #14 to #8.
KUPD had its fifth straight 18-49 victory but with its lowest share during the streak. The two stations tied at #4 last time split apart and moved up. KESZ assumed control of the #2 position with a solid increase while KMXP was up for the second straight survey to lay its claim on #3. KSLX had a small decrease but that was enough to drop the station two places to #4. KZZP moved up to #5 despite its third down book in a row. Two cluster buddies had their best books in over a year to move up and into a tie at #6. KMLE advanced from #9 while KOOL came in from #10. KZON ended its three-book run and fell from #3 to #8. KKFR had its lowest total since DECEMBER and dropped six places to #10.
Minneapolis-St.Paul: KS Stands For Keep Smilin’
It was another banner book for HUBBARD Hot AC KSTP (KS95). Though the station was flat for the second month in a row (9.8-9.8), it was also #1 6+ for the fifth consecutive survey. iHEARTMEDIA Classic Hits KQQL (KOOL) moved up to #2 with its best Frosty-free share since NOVEMBER (6.7-7.3). iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KDWB slipped back to #3 (7.2-6.9) while CUMULUS Classic Rock KQRS remained at #4 (6.2-6.3). iHEARTMEDIA Country KEEY (K-102) was relatively stable at #5 (6.1-6.0). However, its cluster mate – iHEARTMEDIA Hot AC KTCZ (CITIES 97) had its highest share since JULY (5.0-5.5) to move up six places to #6.
While KSTP may have been off a bit 25-54, it remained a dominant #1 for the fifth straight survey. KEEY was off slightly to remain at #2 while KDWB was flat and steady at #3. KQRS was up a bit to continue its reign at #4. Last month’s #5 partnership was dissolved. iHEARTMEDIA Sports KFXN (KFAN) remained in place with a modest increase while CBS RADIO Adult Hits KZJK (JACK) dropped to #6 with a slight decrease. CUMULUS Active Rock KXXR (93X) did not move from the #7 slot but did post its best number in over a year.
For the thirteenth time in the last fourteen surveys, KDWB crashed through the double-digit share barrier 18-34. It was joined in that rarefied air by #2 KXXR, which last accomplished that feat in AUGUST. KEEY was up to #3 as it ended a two-book slide while KSTP dropped back to #4 with a slight decrease. CBS RADIO Country KMNB (BUZ’N) ended a two-book surge but was allowed to stay at #5. KTCZ was close behind at #6 after posting its highest score since DECEMBER.
KDWB was once again #1 18-49 and for the second straight survey missed hitting double digits by the slimmest of possible margins. KSTP was down but remained a solid #2. The two stations tied at #4 last month maintained their relationship status but moved up to #3. KFXN bounced back from a down book while KXXR had its best outing since AUGUST. KEEY was off slightly but that was enough to drop it two places to #5.That officially wraps up our version of the ratings events of MAY. The Ratings Experts from RESEARCH DIRECTOR INC. will return in a month with more diatribes. In the meantime, if we can help you make sense of your NIELSEN numbers, please let us know.
