RADIOCRUNCH founder ANTHONY ACAMPORA has analyzed the demo wars in DALLAS and PHOENIX's FALL Book and discovered that while the ACs that went all-CHRISTMAS music enjoyed the book, so did stations in other formats. The comprehensive details are as follows....
Dallas: Metroplex Gets 'Kissed'; Holiday Hits Fuel KVIL
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40/Mainstream KHKS (KISS) not only grabbed the 12+ lead this book, it also moved to the top spot among adults 18-34 and 18-49 in the FALL ratings for DALLAS-FT. WORTH. The FALL book invoked quite a bit of change in DALLAS, with a number of stations moving around the rankers.
CBS saw AC KVIL soar from 10th to 1st 25-54 (and 8th to 4th 18-49), thanks to the holiday parade of hits. As a matter of fact, there was a ton of movement in the 25-54 cell. UNIVISION Regional Mexican KESS moved from up a tie for third to second, KHKS ranked third. SALEM Christian AC KLTY rose from 7th to 4th. Three stations tied for #5: CUMULUS Sports KTCK (up from 6th), CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KDMX (up from 10th), and UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits KLNO (which soared from 13th place). Expect KLNO to stay solid now that CLEAR CHANNEL has switched KEGL from Mexican Oldies "LA PRECIOSA" to Rock.
CBS got mixed results overall in the 25-54 demo. Classic Hits KLUV dropped from 2nd to 11th, Adult Hits KJKK dipped from 3rd to 13th, and Talk KLLI from 14th to 21st. News KRLD dropped from 24th to 28th. Rhythmic AC KMVK (Movin') was up slightly from 17th to 15th 25-54, and 18th to 16th 18-49. It did slip 18-34, moving from 9th to 16th.
SERVICE Urban KKDA-FM (K104), who was #1 in the SUMMER 25-54, dropped to 8th, tying them with sister Urban AC KRNB. RADIO ONE saw its Urban AC KSOC rise from 22nd into a tie for 13th ... and grow 33% this book.
Top stations 18-34: KHKS (#1), KESS (#2), KBFB (RADIO ONE Rhythmic, #3), KKDA-FM (#4), KDGE (CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative, #5), KLNO (#6), a tie between KDMX and KVIL (#7), KRNB (#9), and KTCY (LIBERMAN Spanish Contemporary, #10).
In the 18-49 cell: KHKS (#1), KESS (#2), KKDA-FM (#3), KVIL (#4), KBFB (#5), KDMX (#6), KLNO (#7), KRNB and KLTY (tied for #8) and KDGE (#10).
Phoenix: KHOT, KESZ Take Demo Crowns; Rhythmic Battle Heats Up; Rock Off
UNIVISION Regional Mexican KHOT (La Nueva), which was an across-the-board champion in the SUMMER book, retained the top position 18-34 and 18-49 this FALL. However, with the CHRISTMAS music extravaganza, CLEAR CHANNEL AC KESZ soared to the top 25-54. KESZ also was up from 4th to 3rd 18-49.
The Rhythmic battle in PHOENIX is heating up. CBS' new sign-on KZON overtook RIVIERA heritage outlet KKFR in some key demos, but KKFR was still very much in the competitive mix with a only a share separating the two 18-34s, a half-share 18-49, and two-tenths of a share 25-54.
The one station that we thought could be affected by KZON's flip from Talk to Rhythmic last summer was CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KZZP (KISS-FM). However, KZZP actually went up in share and rank this book, moving into the #2 spot 18-34, and climbing from 6th to 4th 18-49. CLEAR CHANNEL also saw a big book for Hot AC KMXP. The station rose to 3rd place 25-54, up 20% from the SUMMER and a stellar 61% from a year ago.
Both PHOENIX Country stations saw growth from the SUMMER book. CLEAR CHANNEL's KNIX leaped from 8th to 4th, while CBS rival KMLE was up from 10th to 9th. Both jumped five spots 18-49, with KNIX moving 11th to 6th and KMLE 14th to 9th.
BONNEVILLE is starting to see growth with the move of legendary Talker KTAR from AM over to KKFR's old 92.3 frequency. Meanwhile, the shift of KTAR-A to Sports is making inroads as well. The two stations are up 35% from their first full book after the split in the WINTER. KTAR-AM was 16th 25-54, just ahead of the FM, which ranked 17th.
One thing PHOENIX Rock broadcasters may be asking is where their shares went this book. SANDUSKY Active Rock KUPD slid from 2nd to 9th 18-34, 2nd to 6th 18-49, and 9th to 13th 25-54. Sister Classic Rock KSLX dipped from 7th to 12th in its 25-54 target. Now, SANDUSKY's other Rocker, KDKB, did rebound and move from 14th to 11th 25-54, but the cluster did lose overall shares. RIVIERA Alternative KEDJ also fell from 6th to 13th 18-34 and 15th to 19th 18-49.
