RADIOCRUNCH Pres. ANTHONY ACAMPORA continues to delve into the stories behind the ARBITRON numbers, exclusively on ALL ACCESS. TODAY, it's SAN FRANCISCO, BOSTON and DETROIT.
SAN FRANCISCO: KSOL, KOIT, CUMULUS Score Huge; CBS FM Outlets Ailing
There was shared leadership in SAN FRANCISCO in the FALL 2007 book. UNIVISION Regional Mexican KSOL overtook CLEAR CHANNEL Urban-leaning Rhythmic KMEL in the 18-34 and 18-49 cells this book and scored top honors in both of cells. KSOL was also 2nd 25-54. KMEL remained a solid second in the 18-34 and 18-49 demos. Meanwhile, ENTERCOM AC KOIT climbed into the top 5 18-34, moved up to #2 18-49, while holding on to the spot among adults 25-54.
CUMULUS had to a lot to cheer about. Triple A KFOG moved from 5th to 3rd 25-54. Two other CUMULUS properties also scored a top 10 ranking 25-54. Rock KSAN (THE BONE) moved from 10th to 7th, while Sports KNBR-A climbed to 9th place.
CITADEL Talker KGO remains the top station 12+ - and the legendary outlet still pulls solid 18-49 and 25-54 numbers, ranking ninth 18-49 and fourth 25-54 - a solid ranking for the BAY AREA's most powerful station.
CBS, who has moved the furniture around in the BAY AREA the last few years, continues to have challenges.
* Rhythmic AC KMVQ (MOVIN' 99.7) has yet to grab a foothold. The station was 17th 18-49 and 21st 25-54. KMVQ replaced the legendary KFRC in Fall 2006. KMVQ has seen some slight growth 18-34, where it moves up to 11th.
* In MAY of last year, CBS jettisoned its Talk format on KIFR's 106.9 frequency and brought back the KFRC calls and a re-tooled Classic Hits format. Unlike WCBS-FM/NEW YORK though, KFRC has nowhere near the numbers it did previously on 99.7 -- ranking 30th among adults 25-54. As a matter of fact, KFRC is down 33% to the final 25-54 ratings for the Talk format in WINTER 2007 -- and morning drive has seen a decline of 72% (from when ADAM CAROLLA was there).
* Hot AC KLLC (ALICE @ 97.3) is actually the highest rated of the CBS FM's and came in 15th 25-54, while Alternative KITS slid from 16th to 18th.
CLEAR CHANNEL did land three stations in the top 10. Hot AC KIOI moved from 7th to 5th this book (it was also top 5 18-49). KMEL slid from a tie for 7th (with KMEL) to 8th, while Rhythmic AC KISQ slid from 6th to 10th.
In addition to UNIVISION's KSOL, the markets other big signal Regional Mexican station fared well. SBS outlet KRZZ (LA RAZA) moved from 4th to 3rd 18-34, and surged from 8th to 4th 18-49.
BOSTON: WEEI New BEANTOWN Champ; Holiday Music Fuels WODS, WROR; CC Duo Solid
There was a lot of sports action in the fall for BOSTON fans. The RED SOX won the WORLD SERIES. BOSTON COLLEGE was in the College Football BCS picture for a while, and then there's the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS. That combination helped an already potent WEEI vault to the top spot in BOSTON this fall. The ENTERCOM Sports outlet moved from 4th to 3rd 18-49 and soared 10th to 4th 18-34.
GREATER MEDIA chose not to flip heritage AC WMJX to CHRISTMAS music again this year. However, the company did flip Classic Hits sister WROR while CBS rival WODS also went. The result was solid growth for both WROR (9th to 6th) and WODS (11th to 5th) in the 25-54 cell. It also knocked WMJX out of the top spot 25-54, as the station was off 24% in the cell from the SUMMER.
CLEAR CHANNEL continues to see enormous success for their FM combo of Top 40 WXKS and Rhythmic WJMN. WXKS held the #2 spot 18-34 and 18-49, while ranking 3rd 25-54. WJMN was #1 18-34 and 18-49, and was still a solid 4th with adults 25-54 -- very high for a rhythmic station.
It was a mixed book for GREATER MEDIA's 25-54 heavy cluster. WMJX was off from the SUMMER, but WROR and Talk WTKK both posted nice gains. WTKK leaped from 13th to 9th in demo. Country WKLB (who was 6th in the SUMMER), dropped into a tie with 'TKK. However, a big shocker was the slide of Triple A WBOS into 18th place among adults 25-54. It actually put them behind rival WXRV -- who edged out WBOS this book.
CBS also saw mixed results this book. Classic Hits WODS did surge from 11th to 5th thanks to CHRISTMAS music. Classic Rock WZLX fell from 5th to 6th, while News/Talk WBZ inched up to 8th place. Hot AC WBMX fell from 7th to 11th, and Alternative WBCN moved from 12th to 14th.
DETROIT: CLEAR CHANNEL Urbans Sweep THE MOTOR CITY; WNIC Soars; 'Doug' Top 5
CLEAR CHANNEL's two Urban outlets remained dominant this book. Urban WJLB took the top spot among adults 18-34 and 18-49 this time around. 'JLB was #1 in the summer 18-34, but captured that spot 18-49 in the fall. Meanwhile, Urban AC sister WMXD continues to hold bragging rights for the 25-54 cell. CLEAR CHANNEL also saw holiday music send heritage AC WNIC into the #2 spot among adults 25-54 -- and score a 39% gain from the summer book. It also gave WNIC a staggering 94% share advantage over GREATER MEDIA AC rival WMGC (who ranked 14th).
CITADEL had a lot to smile about in DETROIT. Adult Hits WDRQ (DOUG) and Hot AC sister WDVD tied for the 5th spot 25-54. WDRQ moved up from 7th and WDVD from 10th. CITADEL Talk WJR-A also posted a sharp jump -- rising from 15th to 9th in the 25-54 cell.
GREATER MEDIA's two rockers were off this book. Active Rock WRIF slipped from 2nd to 3rd 25-54, while Classic Rock WCSX fell all the way from 3rd to 9th. The rock winner here: CTVGLOBALMEDIA Alternative CIMX -- which was up 36% in this cell.
CLEAR CHANNEL continues to top RADIO ONE in the battle for the MOTOR CITY's African American listener. CC's WJLB leads RADIO ONE's WHTD by 87% 18-34, 123% 18-49, and 188% with adults 25-54. CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WMXD is ahead of RADIO ONE Urban Oldies WDMK by 154% with adults 25-54.
