BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
DEMO:
In my radio position, I was a personality at KLSU. It was a variety station, but my show was specialized to play Hip-Hop. I am a former Knight Grant fellow and I have a BA from Prairie View A&M University, MMC from Louisiana State University and a Certificate of Social Media Marketing from Northwestern University.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I pray. I work out. I talk to my parents. All of those things keep me really focused and at peace.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I freelance as a writer and a social media curator in my spare time. I also continue to work on my YouTube Docu-series The Mason-Dixon Hip-Hop Project.
3) Do you plan on sticking with radio?
Yes. I love radio. I just need someone to hire me so that I can make it a life-long career.
4) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
I am not getting paid to say this, but AllAccess. I utilize the website every day for job openings and I apply to every position I am eligible for.
5) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I'd like to get another job as a radio personality. I'd also like to expand as a freelance social media curator
6) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, e-mails, rejection letters, etc.)
What courtesy level? No, seriously. I've applied to over 100 jobs this summer, in radio and outside of radio, and I can count on my hands the amount of responses I've gotten back. That includes rejections or interview offers.
7) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
My biggest career accomplishment was being a Knight Grant Fellow. As a fellow, I was able to travel to 11 out of the 14 southern states and interview Hip-Hop artists, scholars, and industry workers on artists' responsibility to social injustice.
8) What do you miss most about music/radio? The least?
Interviews. I loved meeting people and doing interviews, as well as going on remotes. I like to be out with the people.
9) Is there anything specific that you regret doing while you were still working?
I wish I had begun looking for a new job sooner and perfected my air check a lot sooner. This would have put me in a better place for previous applications.
10) Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years?
I've always wanted a syndicated morning show. I think I have the skills to make that happen. I would love to be at a place that would encourage that. I am also striving to be a PD, but I'm sure that's everyone's goal.
Bonus Questions
Seen any great movies?
I love independent films. The one that I've seen most recently was Southside With You. It's a movie about Michelle and Barack Obama's first date. The writers, actors, and directors did a really good job showing their personality. It was really good.
