BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started in Hartford CT at WCCC then WKSS. In DC, WPGC-WIHT-WARW-WIAD. Baltimore, WXYV-WZBA-WWMX ... also did work for Steve Kingston's WRNR in Annapolis.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
Keep a picture of my sons on my desk at home. Just one look, I get all the motivation I need.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I voicetrack for three radio stations.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
Well, I honestly think radio needs more cowbell.
4) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
Forty minutes.
5) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
Scuba instructor. Well that's plan B. PD/OM in the top 100 markets would be nice.
6) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
Salaries have been on the decline for years. Once ownerships change, maybe so will the salaries.
7) What's the most unbelievable on-air bit you were allowed to do?
Way back in the day while doing nights on WPCQ, Played "Da Butt" (the hook) over and over again for an hour and 30 minutes. Created a lot of buzz ... was a story in the A block of the news on all the TV stations. Jammed up the 911 exchange and even had the FCC call the studio asking if everything was okay with the on-air personality.
8) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
One word: FLEXIBLE ... I can bring most any format.
9) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
WPGC then WIHT. Going worst to first in 14 months on WPGC, then beating WPGC in target demos on WIHT.
10) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Never give up, be flexible and never say I shoulda-coulda-woulda. "I should have done ___ I could have been___ I would have done it differently if I ____."
Bonus Questions
What's your handicap now that you've had time to practice?
Handicap what's that? I am so bad at the game, the attendants at MINI Golf laugh at me. I'd rather be 100 feet underwater diving than trying to hit a little white ball down an open field.
