BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Thirty-five years in broadcasting and media. Multi-award winning morning show talent with several CMA and ACM nominations and two Marconi nominations.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and to stay motivated?
Treat weekdays as workdays. Be sure to sit at the desk and respond to e-mails, check career websites, and network. I'm also now able to spend a little more time on my VO business from the home studio and I find that very enjoyable.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I live on the seacoast of New Hampshire. Not quite literally "on the beach," but only a few miles away. I love to look at the ocean. The size, scope and breadth of an ocean can really provide perspective.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
The business certainly has changed. You can turn a profit and still do great radio that entertains and informs. I've seen it and I've done it. Once you head down the road of doing it for no other reason than to make money, you have lost your way.
4) Do you plan on sticking with radio?
If possible.
5) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
This one.
6) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Networking.
7) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
Friends and associates.
8) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
Been fortunate enough to never have to resort to crazy.
9) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
One where I can make radio that is genuinely good and not just "good enough."
10) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
It's radio... Pleasant surprises are rare.
Bonus Questions
Care to contribute a recipe for our "On The Beach" cookbook?
When making eggs, omelet or scrambled, use two whole eggs and two yolks only (no egg white). Easy to separate through your fingers over the sink. Not as healthy for you but much tastier.
