BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started my career as a station mascot ... produced the morning show for Kid Kelly on WBHT (Hot 97), I've worked in Upstate NY, Mid-Mo, Northeast PA and GA. I've spent the majority of my career in Country and Top 40, but have experience in Classic Hits, Hot AC, AC and Mainstream Rock. I've programmed and handled Promotions as well.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and to stay motivated?
I've been hitting the gym more. I think mental and physical health is always a good thing.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I have a five-month-old, so she keeps me pretty busy. I'm also doing some part-time voicetracking.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
It's becoming harder to 'break in' or 'break back in,' but networking is key. Reach out to everyone in the business that you can, and don't be afraid to ask questions, etc.
4) Do you plan on sticking with radio?
Yes. I can't see myself doing anything else except playing baseball and I'm too old for that.
5) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
I think I was on the beach for six months in the beginning of my career.
6) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Netwirk! Don't be afraid to reach out and be creative. Make them want to call/e-mail you back. Just like you would do a break to make the listener want to listen more.
7) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
Fellow radio peeps and All Access.
8) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
Ordered a pizza with black olives on the side and used the olives to write 'Hire Bryan' on the pizza. On the inside of the box I taped my resume and CD and delivered the pizza to the PD. I had a call back within an hour.
9) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I am multi-format talented so I don't have a huge preference to formats but I'm especially fond of Country and Hot AC. I'd like to do mornings or afternoons again.
10) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
I think it depends on the situation. I've seen extremely low and about average.
