Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
I was lucky enough to work at WBCN in Boston for over eight years. I got to work in all on-air capacities there, as both a solo jock and co-host. I also got to work in all dayparts. Four years ago, I decided to head to sunny Los Angeles, where I helped create the first made-for-mobile television all-original content Rock station. I was Executive Producer and on-air talent, doing a lot of what I did behind the mic, only in front of the camera.
For the past few months, I have been doing commercial and voiceover work, but I am jonesing to get back on the air.
1) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Listening to music and going to see live bands. L.A. is a great place to see already established bands, but also to check out brand new baby bands.
2) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I left radio, although to work in a similar capacity in a different medium, and my epiphany came when I realized how much I missed it. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. They say it is as addictive as heroin. ( ....or is that cigarettes?)
3) Do you plan on sticking with the radio industry?
LOL! I can't seem to get away ... it was my first love.
4) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Um ... through "On the Beach" -- All Access, of course!
5) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
Um ... All Access, of course! (Do I get brownie points here?)
6) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, e-mails, rejection letters, etc.)
My general experience has been positive. More times than not, if they don't have an opening, the PD will at least touch base, which is greatly appreciated.
7) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
Besides my sparkling wit, outstanding intelligence and extreme modesty? :) I am extremely hard working, take direction well and am low maintenance.
8) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
More. I have more time to. And it's interesting to see the way stations are changing and growing.
9) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
I don't think I have just one. I'm pretty proud of all I've done, and more than that I feel extremely blessed to have experienced the things I have.
10) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Just go for it! Ignore the bad guys you meet on the way, and truly appreciate the good ones.
