Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
I have been in radio for 20 years spending my career in the Midwest area. I've worked at KMJM and KATZ/St. Louis, WKKV/Milwaukee and WJZE/Toledo. My positions have included serving as PD, APD, MD, Mixshow Director, Promotions and on- air personality.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I keep myself surrounded with positive people with great influence. I also meditate and listen to motivational audio books.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Keeping up on the latest trends and movement in radio. I'm also into production and mobile DJing. Aside from that, I have been involved with real estate investing.
3) Do you plan on sticking with the music/radio industry?
Yes, my passion is strong and I've had great success in the positions that I have held.
4) What's the best to get your foot in the door?
Internship is the best way. Make sure to do plenty of networking. You never know where you or someone might end up.
5) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access website.
6) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
OM or PD/on-air position.
7) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, e-mails, rejection letters, etc.)
Not as I expected. Many don't take the time out to give courtesy callbacks or respond to e-mails. That's unfortunate, because you never know when you may end up on the other side of the desk.
8) With consolidation, there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I have prepared myself to carry several hats and succeed. I'm also fluent in the operations and relations of all departments, not just programming.
9) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
Yes, especially on the Internet. I like to get the vibe of how other markets are performing and sounding.
10) What do you miss most about radio?
Everything from programming to creating exciting NTR events and managing a great staff.
