Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
I started in Los Angeles and look where it got me -- Macon, GA! HELP!
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
Comedy, and also keeping current with the great new music coming out every day. I became quite well known for being "way ahead of the curve." I pick out music that eventually tops the charts. Keeping myself busy and not letting my pipes rust helps too.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Picking up voice work here and there and discovering new bands and shopping them to labels. Some of the bands are actually getting deals. According to several people I look up to in this business, I have what they call a "Golden Ear" for music.
3) Do you plan on sticking with the music/radio industry?
Yes, unless television comes my way. I was recently on a syndicated show on a program provider whose initials come directly after WL. They were quite raunchy and not really my cup of tea, but as they say, "There's a seat for every ass..." Radio to me is something a lot more than potty humor and shock value. It is a way of life and should be treated with respect. So yes, as long as there are jobs in radio, I will remain in radio.
4) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Be persistent and knock on not just one door but several. Be flexible, and do not be afraid to take a job you are overqualified for. In my experience, when I have been told I am overqualified, it came from someone who is insecure in their own employment situation and saw me as a threat. Don't let that get in your way, and press on.
5) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
I drove 1,800 miles through bad weather only to get undercut by a college kid for less money. C'est la vie. It led me here to the beach!
6) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I am flexible. I love being on the air, but I am one hell of a PD/MD, and I think doing production and imaging is better than sex. I have done it all including promotions/sales/operations, yadda, yadda, yadda. I will wear as many hats as I am asked to wear.
7) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
Salaries are waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy down, and it is no secret why. Rather than look in a big market and get paid what the "Fry Guy" makes, I look in smaller markets where one can still make a livable wage where the cost of living is more in line.
8) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
If I considered myself a racist! LOL, nothing could be further from the truth, as my father has been publishing civil-rights magazines for 40+ years. I think the racist was the interviewer, now that I look at it.
9) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I multitask. I call it "Seacresting."
10) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
Putting together my syndicated show "Rockstar Full Throttle" is up there, but I must say that taking a station from the bottom of the Arbitron book to the top in half a book is the tops for me.
