Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
Currently: PT at Q104/Cleveland; just wrapped co-starring in the film "Cheap Sunglasses" filmed in Cleveland; hosting the kids TV show "Ask Gilby"; writing and performing in the comedy sketch show "Tinker and Tater"; doing freelance voice work -- looking for more commercials and stations to VT. Previous experience: mornings at Q92/Canton, OH; mornings at 97.5 WONE-FM/Akron.
1) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I've been fortunate enough to have been at the right places at the right time to network with people in the entertainment industry. I recently did an independent film, and that led to a good recommendation, which led to a comedy show I'm involved with. I've got a literary agent I'm working with to sell some of the screenplays I've written. I definitely have been able to focus on some creative things that are close to my heart ... now -- paycheck, please! : )
2) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
I'm listening more. I've really had the chance to hear what works and what doesn't for some stations out there. It's an interesting case study.
3) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, emails, rejection letters, etc.)
Fantastic. There are a lot of pros out there who actually respect people!
4) What do you miss most about radio? The least?
I miss that daily "high" of giving it your creative best every day. I also miss the steady income! LOL! What I do not miss and won't ever miss is ... the drama most radio stations seem to have.
5) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Stay true to yourself. Absorb everything like a sponge. Eliminate the word "no" from your vocabulary. And no matter how hard it is, do not become an a**kisser. It pays off in the short-run, but long-term -- not so much!
6) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
If I would be interested in having the PD's baby!
7) Are you able to slow down and enjoy free time doing things with your family and friends that you probably did not have time to do while you were working?
Yes! It's been a pleasure rediscovering family and friends and actually appreciating them again. It's hard when you're working 40+ hours and all that goes along with this biz to "Stop and smell the roses." Being on the beach forces you to think, to re-evaluate ... you learn what matters and what doesn't, and you go from there.
8) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
Finally having ratings success after years of hearing "you're the best show in the market, the numbers will come."
9) Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years?
In five years? On tmz.com for something outrageous. In 10 years? Living as an eccentric millionaire ... and being talked about on tmz.com. LOL!
10) Do you plan on sticking with the radio industry?
In some form or another, I will be a part of the entertainment industry. My story is really just beginning. Word!
Bonus Questions
Bonus Question: My favorite new diversion is ...
Taking a nap. I'm catching up on years of sleep deprivation from doing mornings!
