KKDA/Dallas (Night Host 10p-2a) 2006-071) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
Thank God for his grace. If I didn't have a positive belief system, this business would have driven me nuts years ago! My wife, Oshena, has been a rock for me. It's a crazy business and I'm glad that I had the sense to marry my best friend.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Well, now that my diet consists strictly of ramen noodles and pork and beans, I've lost some weight thanks to the RADIO UNEMPLOYMENT DIET PLAN! Seriously, I'm doing parodies and comedy bits through my company, http://www.code-blu.com as well as imaging and production. Primarily I focus on bits for Mainstream Top 40, Urban, and Rhythmic stations. I also build a few websites here and there and teach a few courses at the Dallas campus of Connecticut School of Broadcasting.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I think that something has to give with this "cookie cutter" radio that seems to permeate the industry. I think personality radio is something you can't put a price on, and it's long overdue for a comeback. Stations that focus on solid programming, imaging and community presence are guaranteed to win! It just requires some coaching and determination.
4) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
I sent Dusty Hayes in Austin a package that had a picture of me wearing a pair of shorts, while a woman covered my nipples. The caption read "If you hire me, I'll keep my clothes on." It got me the interview and I got the job!
5) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I want to work with a company that I can actually grow roots in. When I was younger, moving across the country with a U-Haul was cool, but now being married and having the desire to have children has made me want to push for some long-term stability. Format isn't important, neither is market size. I want to be somewhere where I can be creative, make a good salary and have a serious impact on ratings and the almighty bottom line.
6) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
I had a station ask me if I'd ever been to the "hood" because I was "too polished." I honestly thought they were joking. They weren't.
7) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I make sure that I remain multi-faceted. If you need a PD/APD/MD/Production Director/Webmaster/Imaging Director then I'm the guy who can do them all well.
8) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
There's not one thing that just sticks out in my head. Awards are cool but there's nothing like being there for folks who are up and coming. I visited a station where I used to work and bumped into a girl I hadn't seen in a decade. She told me that I inspired her to pursue the business. I've never been so touched in my life.
9) If you were offered a similar position to what you were doing for considerably less money, would you seriously consider taking the job just to stay in the biz?
Yes, but it would have to be the right type of deal.
10) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Be yourself. Allow yourself to be coached, but keep what makes you an individual and guard your integrity with your life!
