NAME:Daniela Sonnino, aka 'Brooke Davis'LAST WITH:KUZZ/Bakersfield, CA
Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
I did ski reports and comedy bits on Bob Keller's Café Rock on KZAP as "Roxy Thunder." First on-air gig as "Kari Sommers" at "The Breeze"/Sacramento, thanks to Lawrence Tanter (voice of the L.A. Lakers), who gave me my break. I did weekends 6-mid until I was replaced by a computer. Segued from there to five years of weekends and fill-ins at Y92/Sacramento. Got out of the biz for two years, and then it sucked me back in. What can I say, I was powerless. Went back to Clear Channel and did two more years, first as the news anchor 7-10p on Mark Williams' show on KFBK, then as the dedicated morning and afternoon sidekick/news anchor/traffic reporter on "The Flash"
and "Real Country," both owned by First Broadcasting.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I live my life in a good mood. What good is it to be bummed and bitter about the business -- or life, for that matter? We have the greatest job in the world working in radio, and there are too many things that are good in life to dwell on the crap. Everyone that knows me will tell you I'm one of the most upbeat, positive people that they know. That's just how I roll.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I do research for a company that studies jobs in California, so I have work while I'm looking.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
Radio is addictive. You can tell yourself all you want to that you're done with "the business," but you'll be back. Once it's in your blood it never leaves, and you miss it, so you're compelled to return.
4) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
Just a couple of months. Another door always seems to open when one shuts.
5) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access, of course.
6) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
I spent a wad of cash to buy a gift basket for a PD to show how awesome I'd be as a promotions director. Little did I know that they hired from within for that job way before it was posted.
7) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
"Do you like the mountains or the ocean better?" I was thinking, "What the f*ck, are we dating?"
8) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
Of course. I'm a big time radiophile anyway, so I like to keep up on most of the formats in town.
9) If you were offered a similar position to what you were doing for considerably less money, would you seriously consider taking the job just to stay in the biz?
Radio has never been about the money for me. I just love doing it, so I would have to say yes.
10) Where do you see yourself in five years. ... 10 years?
On the air ... on the air ... on the air.
