1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I try to pray on a daily basis and spend more time with my family. I play my drums for release. I try to keep things in perspective, that besides God, my family and friends are what is important in this life.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I have started an exercise program, and I spend time playing my drums and trying to invent new ways to play a 4/4 time signature. Actually, to be honest, a lot of my time is spent making the odd spot here and there and getting my web site up to ship-shape. I am currently ready to produce some imaging and commercials right now, I have a few stations that I do this for currently, but I'm always trying to expand my horizons in this arena. I LOVE imaging and LOVE production.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I feel like everything is going internet and satellite radio these days. Most of my observations tend to lean towards getting radio ready for the twenty first century, not back in the 80's where it is now. This means adopting HD Radio - NOW - all across the board, to stay in-tune with internet radio stations and satellite radio.
4) Do you plan on sticking with the radio industry?
To be totally honest, our industry is saturated with extremely great and talented people. I do not mind throwing my 2 cents into the mix, but I see a trend in everything sounding the same. One person will figure out a new record scratch, echo effect, etc., and everyone else will copy it. I try to think outside of the box, but that is so cliche now that thinking 'outside the box' to me is now 'inside the box'. To REALLY get outside the box we have to get WAY outside the box now. I want to find a station where I can spread my creative wings and really pound down the competition.
5) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
This is it! This past December 31st was the gloomy day! Wings are great out here on the beach, but way too salty. Got any buffalo sauce?
6) What is your best way to get your foot in the door?
I think it is more about doing something for the PD, or showing the PD that you have what it takes to be what they need in the market. Show the PD that you're willing to take the big chances and show that you are not afraid to do the job… weekends, weeknights, overnights… whatever the case.
7) So far what has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
To be honest, AllAccess.com and www.hisair.net. Friends in the industry have also been a great help in finding the odd spot and imaging job. I work with a great bunch of people in a 'Talent Pool.' I highly recommend forming or finding one of your own.
8) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
Honestly, I would like to find a few voicetracking, production and imaging gigs where I can work from home. I enjoy spending time with my daughter and being 'home' for a change. But I would take a job at a station, so there you go.
9) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, emails, rejection letters, etc.)
90% of the places I apply, I get no response. So I would say it is fairly a poor response rate. But from the people that do respond, they get a prompt 'Thank you for responding to my resume and please contact me if you are ever in need of my services!" There are some in this industry, (you know who you are) who keep bugging the prospective employer until they are blue in the face. I know. I was once on the other side of the fence. So in a way, I do not blame a lot of the people who do not respond. They are just tired of people e-mailing them.
10) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
I went from being a non-paid intern to Production Director in less then 6 months at WJYF/WWWD/WAEF/WTIF-AM/WTIF-FM/WBJY. Check out their website, www.thehook.fm. They're a great bunch of talented people, and industry folks should watch some of the innovation going on there.
Bonus Questions
Any books you can recommend to people who need something inspirational to read?
I would recommend reading the Bible and/or The Purpose Driven Life. Both are very inspirational if you are looking to REALLY change your life.
