Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
I've worked for some LEGENDARY stations such as WLS, WYTZ, and WYSY all in my hometown of Chicago, and not so legendary stations in Mississippi, Alaska, Peoria, BFE, etc.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I work out religiously, practice Taekwondo, play the bass in a local band, and have the love and support from my wife, Nanci.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I work out religiously, practice Taekwondo, play the bass in a local band, and have the love and support from my wife, Nanci ... and do voice-overs!
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
Since I started this gig back in '77 (that's 1977), radio was fun! No pressure, no BS, just wholesome family entertainment. Nowadays, it just plain STINKS! The pukers still exist, PD's aren't taking the chances they used to take on talent, and the same bits from back in the day are still being used. No one has an ORIGINAL thought anymore. Am I bitter? Of course I'm not bitter ... who says I'm bitter? Bring it on!
4) Do you plan on sticking with radio?
In spite of my previous comment, ABSOLUTELY! What else is there but to entertain, make someone smile when they're down, cry when they're crying, shake hands, kiss babies, bring The WHO on stage, you know, the usual.
5) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
Now marks my 10th year being on the beach. Should I turn over?
6) So far what has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
ALL ACCESS, hands down! By the way, are there any openings on your end?
7) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
President of the United States. Stranger things have happened. But, seriously PD, MD, OM, GSM, DDM, DDS, GM, PhD, MD ...
8) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
Why do you want to work HERE?
9) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
Of course. I've got to keep my chops up hittin' the POST.
10 How will this experience change you when you get back to work?
I'll have a lot to talk about!
Bonus Questions
Oprah or Dr. Phil?
Oprah. She's the Queen of all media (sorry Howard!).
Care to contribute a low-cost recipe to our "ON THE BEACH" cookbook?
A can of tuna and Ramen noodles. Good eatin'!
