Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
2000 - 2002 Assistant Production Director WBAP Dallas, TX
2002 - 2003 Production Director Gross Communications, Bend OR
2003 - 2006 Middays/Traffic Reporter KWPK, KWLZ, KQAK, KMJZ, KRCO/Bend OR
2006 - 2006 Production Director, KTFW/KFWR Fort Worth, TX1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
Drinks. Lots of them. Seriously though, just remind yourself why you got into the industry to begin with...because you love it and you'll put yourself through a lot of personal pain to do it.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I'm working on starting up a production/imaging company focusing on unique, offbeat commercials for clients.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
Radio is a beast that is continually changing. Many people have said it's difficult to jump back in once you've been out of it for a while. This is my first extended period of being on the beach, and frankly, I'm enjoying it. Just not the way I enjoy swimming. You don't get to do what you truly love.
4) Do you plan on sticking with the music/radio industry?
In one form or another.
5) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
This is my longest stretch in almost 7 years. Its getting' hot out here.
6) What is your best way to get your foot in the door?
Do anything and everything. Always be at their disposal. Radio managers need workhorses. If you don't know how to do something, take it upon yourself to learn. Get a job as a promotions assistant, do the job well, be entirely dependable, and you've already got an in. Talk to people around the office. See what you can help them with. Find your area of expertise, worm your way in there, and fly under the radar and you can construct a pretty great job for yourself or find yourself landing in a real position. Just don't have an ego and be ready to do what needs to be done.
7) So far what has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access of course. But nothing compares to good old networking. It's not what you know, but who you know these days that'll land you a job.
8) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I'd like to continue on with the evolution of my production and copywriting. Clients could receive so much better service from their sales teams and production teams than what I've heard on the air lately. Yawn.
9) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
I still listen to radio religiously. Mostly to keep up with the times and to hear the spins other Production Directors are putting on their work. But these days, I think if I had no experience in the industry, I wouldn't be listening to it as often as I listened throughout the 1980's.
10) Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
Having my production company up and running and being in demand. I'd like to cultivate a long time career in the DFW market and strive to be like those names and voices I grew up listening to.
