Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
27 years in the biz. Many years as a Top 40/AC personality, finally moving over to full time talk in 1996. Most recent stops: Nashville, Birmingham, Nextmedia's suburban Chicago South Cluster and Milwaukee.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I look back on the good work we've done here in Milwaukee and smile. I know that WSSP is still behind the curve, but I also know everybody gave it their best effort. You get points for good effort where I come from.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
My honey do list. I have more projects around the house right now than Tim the Toolman, Bob Vilia and Norm combined.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
Fortunately, being a Sports Talk PD, I understand, as I do with the teams we cover, that you are hired to be fired and its all part of the gig. Nobody promised me fair, so I am grateful for the opportunity and hope to take the knowledge that I have acquired and use it at my next job.
4) What is your best way to get your foot in the door?
Have friends that care about you that have friends who are looking for someone with your qualities and vision.
5) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
For me personally, it's all about fair market value and making sure you get a salary proportionate with market size and your experience/track record. I'm not all about the Benjamins, I'm all about providing for my family and being able to save some money on the side.
6) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
Why I played "Take this job and shove it" when I quit a station in 1983. This question was asked in 1986. Apparently, the manager conducting the interview was a friend of the manager I did that to.
7) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I'd like to think that I have ability, commitment and experience. I grew up when radio was really cool in the third largest market in the country. I know what it is supposed to sound like.
8) What do you miss most about radio? The least?
I miss the people I worked with at Entercom Milwaukee the most. I had a great staff with guys who busted their butts for me everyday. The opportunity to work down the hall from Brian Kelly, Jim Morales and Natalie DiPietro was fantastic. I miss the mind games, head dances and lack of comprehension the least.
9) What have you learned about yourself, others, or life in general in your downtime?
1) I'm an incurable workaholic. 2) If you treat people with respect and kindness, they will repay you in spades when you need it.
10) Is there anything specific that you regret doing while you were still working?
I have few regrets. We worked very hard and I think we had an outstanding product for the market we were in. If I did have a regret it would be that I should have been more vocal about those things that may have slowed us down.
