1) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I realized that radio is all I know how to do. It's what I've done and excelled at for the past 25 years!
2) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
This is the first time I have ever lost a job in my life!
3) What is your best way to get your foot in the door?
A great tape, a great attitude and the ability to still learn something new every day, even after 25 years. If you think you know it all, you're done.
4) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
Believe it or not, leave a job to come back. I was parttime at WDHA in New Jersey back in 1986, and Mike Boyle said the best advice he could give me was to find a fulltime gig somewhere else because his staff was solid at the time. A week later I did. I got a gig at the Jersey Shore. Exactly one year later an opening at WDHA came up, and Mike immediately hired me.
5) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
"Do you know how to swim? We are in a flood plain." (Yes, I had to be rowed to the building during a flood.)
6) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I have a great relationship with listeners and clients. I have closed many deals being on sales calls. I have a huge commitment to community. I do more charity gigs than paid remotes.
7) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
Yes. I can finally hear the shows that are on during the time I was on. (Middays in St. Louis for the past 14 years.)
8) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
Number one 18-34 and 25-54 for several books in a row.
9) What do you miss most about radio? The least?
The most: I had a lunchtime request show called "Porcelli's Deli." It was the #1 thing mentioned about the station in research. The least: I can't answer that one. I miss being on the air very much.
10) Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years?
Behind a mic. It's what I love.
Bonus Questions
1) My favorite new diversion is...
Poker. I watch it on TV constantly, and I am fascinated by it. I read a book by former World Series of Poker champ Tom McEvoy, and one phrase in the book fascinates me the most. "Poker is not a card game with people. It's a people game with cards."
