Please begin by giving us a brief career history:
WIOQ/Philadelphia, WRFY/Reading, Metro Networks/Philadelphia, WIOQ/Philadelphia again, WBBO/Monmouth-Ocean
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I keep reminding myself that even the greatest talents in the world have gone without work for some time, and that quitters never win.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I am very in touch with Katie and Matt and also Regis and Kelly! I'm trying to do some bartending and waitressing to pay the bills; other than that I'm constantly online trying to find my next great gig!
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I've had my moments of discouragement, but I know that I got into this business for a reason and I'm not willing to give up yet. It's so rare that people get to do what they truly love for a living. I'm one of those lucky ones and I'll wait on as many tables as I have to until someone realizes I'm just what they're looking for.
4) Do you plan on sticking in the music/radio industry?
Absolutely! See above answer. That says it all..
5) What is your best way to get your foot in the door?
Follow-up and persistence, although I have crossed the line between persistence and annoyance, so be careful. I also think I have a fabulous demo!
6) So far what has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access is the best by far, but since I've been looking for awhile now I'm expanding my searches to all different places on the internet. Plus some contacts and friends I have in the biz.
7) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I want to co-host a morning show at a music-intensive station. Or I would love to get my foot in the door of a talk format. I definitely know how to talk!
8) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, emails, rejection letters, etc.)
A lot of places blow you off completely, but I kind of expected that. It's nice to know for sure though if you are out of the running.
9) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
It depends on the market.
10) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I like to think my demo is what separates me from the pack. It doesn't hurt to pretty things up when it comes to sending the demo.
