Please begin by giving us a brief career history...
KQCV-Intern OKC, KABS Internet Station OKC.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
Alchohol. Not really. I just keep thinking, "If this place doesn't want me, then I'm just not their cup of tea." Nothing more I can do.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I re-started my car detailing business since graduation in July for the money, and I'm teaching myself the "art" of blacksmithing. It's harder than it looks, but the nurses doing my skingraphs are good looking.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I live in a one horse town in Northern Oklahoma, but have the privilege of listening to three local stations. They all broadcast a live morning show, but the rest of their broadcast day is filled with syndication programming, which is not good for localizing. I don't know how they pull the shares they do.
4) What is your best way to get your foot in the door?
You tell me.
5) So far what has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access, and one of my mentors, Ben. He gives me all the job openings he hears of, but that's his job. He does it for all graduates of American Broadcasting School.
6) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, emails, rejection letters, etc.)
I know that employers, PD's, and HR people get hundreds of applications each week. I don't expect to ever be contacted unless the company has an interest in me. However, when you do an interview, and the interviewer asked you to contact him, and ignores you after that point, that's just bad business relations. If I'm not the person you want to hire, just tell me. I'm a big boy and can handle it. Business is business.
7) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
I had a station owner offer me $6 an hour for morning drive, part time, paying only hours I was in studio. But I've found the entry-level positions I can obtain pay better than I though they would.
8) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
Do you prefer briefs, boxers, or au'natural? Seriously.
9) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Just know that there is a job for you. You have a skill, and somebody will want it. You might have to pound the pavement and go find it, but once you do, you'll have a great story to tell All Access about 'How you got this job.' Don't get discouraged.
10) Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
5 years -- paying my dues. 10 years -- hopefully working in Texas, since my retirement plan includes Houston as a new home.
