NAME:Brandon 'Noize'LAST WITH:WKQI (Channel 955)/DetroitPHONE:(313) 595-6235WEB:... just hit me up on Facebook
Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
From Detroit with five years in the game, I've seen some crazy $#@&. My first radio job was given to me by Brent Carey @ WTWR (Tower 98-3)/Toledo. I did part-time there for a short period of time. Then Nathan Reed and Clay Church hooked me up with nights for a while at WRCL (Club 93-7)/Flint, MI. After spending eight months in Flint, I signed on to work at a "reality" Top 40 station in Fresno, CA. Spending a year in Cali working 13 hour days, 7 days a week doing nights, scheduling music, and the station's imaging for Jerry Clifton put me in the fast lane to become a big-market jock and eventually a station programmer (...it'll happen). I came back home to eagerly work for Dom "the man" Theodore and Beau "The Jammer" Daniels @ WKQI. Working with Big Boy (Chunky) on a nightly basis showed me what it took to have a HUGE mass-appealing, instant funny, half-baked and heavily interactive show. After taking over the night show on WKQI for a short period of time, I've found myself on the beach. It's not a bad beach ... there's Pina Coladas and stuff, but I'm ready to get back to work.
1) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
DUDE! It's the beach, what do you think I'm doing?
2) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
It's nice to see that rumblings of a bright future are happening in the business (especially my format) despite all of the cutbacks everyone is experiencing.
3) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
This is it. I've never been unemployed since I've had my first gig in radio.
4) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
To work in Cali, Clifton made us take a bus to get there ... I'M FROM DETROIT! Three-and-a-half days ... uggghhhh...
5) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
Seacrest's. That fool is PAID!
6) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
By doing a way different style from what's out there.
7) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
Obviously not, because I'm not on the air. But I have found myself listening to more of a variety of stations around the dial.
8) If you were offered a similar position to what you were doing for considerably less money, would you seriously consider taking the job just to stay in the biz?
Well, I worked for Clear Channel before so I don't really see how it could get much lower.
9) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
If you're gonna do this ... then do it for a reason and make it good. Please don't just be a carbon copy of the last 15 years of radio ... PLEASE!
10) Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
Five -- Probably APD/MD in a big market, putting in my time to be the man. Ten --MAKIN DOUGH!
Bonus Questions
Great movies I've recently seen ...
"YES MAN" Starring Jim Carrey. Honestly, you should see it. Especially if you find yourself in a rut and are looking for the next phase of your life.
