NAME:Sean Kernick 'Radar Love'LAST WITH:KBZI/ Pittsburg, KSPHONE:(620) 230-5323EMAIL:seank76@cableone.net
Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
Intern, KSYN-FM, June 2003-December 2003
Weekends, KSYN-FM, January 2004-July 2004
Morning Show Producer, KXDG-FM, August 2004-July 2005
Overnights/Morning Show Producer, KSYN-FM, August 2005-June 2007
Middays, KBZI-FM, November 2007-February 2008While studying one night I was listening to the night jock on KSYN. He said if you wanted a fun summer internship, go to the website and apply. I applied that night, never thinking that I would get one. Two weeks later, I got a phone call and interviewed the following week. I spent that summer driving two hours almost every day because I knew it was what I wanted to do after I graduated. They finally hired me after six months, then promoted me to full-time once I had my degree.
1) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Looking for a job is my full-time job.
2) Do you plan on sticking with the radio industry?
Absolutely. I love interacting with my listeners on a daily basis, whether it's with a great bit, talking about the latest town activities, or giving away a great prize. Nowhere else can you impact so many people every day.
3) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
This is my first time out here. I never thought I'd be here this long, but I know there is an opportunity waiting for me somewhere.
4) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Networking. Everyone knows someone in this business. If they haven't, contact someone who works there. The worst thing they can do is not help.
5) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access and the state broadcasting association websites.
6) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
Middays or afternoons with either MD or APD stripes.
7) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, e-mails, rejection letters, etc.)
It's next to nothing. Those that have replied have given me solid criticism, something I will always take.
8) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I consider myself a jock of all trades. Doing overnights, I pulled a live air shift, handled production (barter, syndication, imaging, and creating new spots), oversaw promotions, maintained all the websites for the cluster, plus generated sales leads when I was off air.
9) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
I normally spend a week listening to different streams, hearing different promotions and playlists. I try to play PD, wondering how I would improve the station.
10) Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
In five years, I'd like to be an APD in a top-150 market. In 10 years, hopefully the PD in the same market.
