Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
Weekends/swing, KTXY/Columbia, MO 2004-2007; full-time nights, KIXY/San Angelo TX from 2007- March,2009. Now back to part-time at KTXY.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I'm lucky enough to be back at my first station part-time. I'm still looking for my next full-time gig. Luckily, I got a great letter of recommendation from my last employer after being let go. I have a deep passion for music and radio, so determination keeps me motivated and positive.
2) Do you plan on sticking with the music/radio industry?
I definitely plan on sticking with radio. I knew from an early age that this was what I wanted to do.
3) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
This is it, coming up on four months.
4) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Networking ... and be willing to do whatever is asked of you.
5) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access ... and friends in the radio biz.
6) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I would love to co-host a morning show. My main focus right now is to get back on air every day regardless of the shift. Hopefully I will be able to stay on a Top 40 or Hot AC station.
7) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, e-mails, rejection letters, etc.)
I don't get as many responses as I'd like. I understand that PDs are very busy. Anytime I do get any type of response, I'm very appreciative, and I respect the person for it.
8) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I make sure the job is done right, however long it may take. I'm more than willing to wear multiple hats, and I'm a great team player.
9) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
I was lucky enough to inherit a #1-rated night show for my first full-time gig. I not only kept the show #1, but increased its numbers each book. I think my listeners relate well to me, can tell that I love what I do, and that I have fun each day.
10) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Never stop learning, network ... and enjoy the ride!
