As we discussed in our series on this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the new "thing" for 2010 is 3-D...at least until the new Apple tablet makes it into the market. 3-D is riding a huge wave of popularity due to the movie Avatar (now the highest-grossing movie ever) and a push by TV makers to develop 3-D capable sets. Also announced during the CES were several new 3-D TV ventures, including one from ESPN and another with Sony, IMAX and Discover Communications as partners.
Obviously, if 3-D TV is to take off, aside from a steady stream of programming, resolving a number of technical hurdles will be essential. A couple of those already seem to be on resolved. For example, HDMI (the all-in-one digital TV connection standard) has created a 3-D connection that should become the universal standard. Also, 3-D Blu-ray has been approved. This still leaves some big decisions, such as which basic standard will be adopted for the TV sets, the polarized light method or the shuttered glasses.
