Gartner reports <http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1421013> that smartphones made up 19% of all mobile phone sales worldwide in the second quarter of this year. This is an increase of over 50% from a year ago. In many markets, such as the US and Europe, the smartphone percentage is well above 19%. Also, there's a different leader in the list of most popular smartphone platforms worldwide than in the US. Here are the worldwide leaders:
- Nokia Symbian 41.2%
- RIM Blackberry 18.2%
- Google Android 17.2%
- Apple iOS 14.2%
The top spot in the US is currently held by Android. However, although Android ranks third in the worldwide analysis, consider that its share a year ago was just 1.8%.
