1) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment that made you realize "this is it"?
My Grandpa (on my Mom's side) was the key inspiration for me deciding to pursue a career in radio. I remember even when he went into his wheelchair, he would always have his radio with him and brag about how "I got Toledo in last night!" One of my most rewarding experiences was when my oldest nephew was born. I announced his birth on the air -- and my Grandpa and Grandma found out they had a great-grandson from my announcement.
2) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now what you didn't then, would you still do it?
Absolutely! I love radio.
3) How long have you been at WKQZ and what makes this station so unique?
I started at WKQZ in 2001. It will be 12 years this October. WKQZ is unique because of our heritage in the market. We have the longest running morning show in the market, Joe & The Poorboy, and our promotions have strong branding.
4) Congratulations on your well-deserved promotion to APD. I understand you're also still the Promotion Director for Z93. How are you going to manage both of these important positions?
My co-workers are the reason I can handle both responsibilities. We are a team here. I am fortunate to have Adam Shilling, The Poorboy on our morning show, who also has a background as a Promotions Director; Joe Volk, who also works as an Account Executive; Jay Randall, our night guy who is an amazing talent; and Stan Parman, my PD, who is always encouraging me.
5) You also do middays on the station. How do you like being on the air and do you do any special lunchtime or afternoon features?
I love being on the air. My air shift actually runs from noon-6p Monday-Friday. I have a number of features that I do. "Lynn's Lunchbox" is my request hour at noon. At 1p it's "Lynn's Lyrical Challenge". At 2p we do a hair band feature called "Hair & Gone". In the 3 o'clock hour is "The Matinee" & at 4p we run "Afternoon Sports w/ Joe." The 4 & 5 o'clock hours are also when I focus on different topics that are of interest to our demographic.
6) Let's talk about the music on Z93. What do the Rock listeners in Saginaw expect from your station?
Z93 listeners expect to hear their favorite songs along with the hottest new songs.
7) What's your take on current music in the Active Rock format? Is it as good as six months ago, better, or about the same?
I think Active Rock is constantly changing and because of that it's hard to say if things are better or worse. The constant changes and new sounds being created are what makes Active Rock the most exciting format I've worked in. I've worked in this format for 12 years and it honestly seems like it's flown by because it's always so exciting.
8) How does your station interact with it's listeners via your web site and other Social Media like Facebook and Twitter?
WKQZ interacts with our listeners through our website by giving them the opportunity to win prizes, keep our concert calendar up to date, our VIP/E-mail Club, podcasts and pics! Our Facebook and Twitter accounts are also great tools to get instant feedback from listeners ... and trust me, our listeners are not shy about voicing their opinions!
9) Since you're also the Promotions Director for Z93, tell us the most effective Promotion you did last year?
Our most effective promotion is our "High Card Showdown." We give our listeners the opportunity to win "His" & "Hers" Harley Davidson motorcycles. Over a five-week period, we are all over the Mid-Michigan area, giving listeners the chance to qualify to win the bikes. It's an exciting promotion that gives us the opportunity to spend time with our listeners and clients.
10) Who is the best live band you saw in 2012?
This is a tough one, because all the bands were great, but I will say the Pop Evil did an incredible job at our Christmas show this year ... as they always do!
