1) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment that made you realize "this is it?"
I was actually on the University radio station with a good friend of mine. We were on 2-4a Tuesday mornings, thought it was fun, but had no ambition to continue. It wasn't until I was trying to do radio sales that I realized I was way better at just playing music rather than sell it.
2) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now what you didn't then, would you still do it?
I wouldn't change a thing, really. It takes a particular type of person to be in the radio business. Guess I fell into that category. When you find it, you're like "Oh! I should have been here all along!"
3) How long have you been at WYBB (98 Rock) and what makes this station so unique?
WYBB is like a Unicorn farting rainbows. It's amazing and awesome, but we don't know why it's happening. Just kidding. We're a legit Rock station. Most people think Charleston is full of Southern Charmers listening to the banjo, but we like to ROCK. And, we do.
4) You are also programming the Triple A station WCOO (105.5 The Bridge). How do you find time to program TWO stations and also do an afternoon shift on 98 Rock?
It's hard ... for real. Programming Slipknot and Ingrid Michelson on the same day is enough to make anyone's brain hemorrhage. Sometimes I have to walk out to the parking lot and switch gears, but at the end of the day, good music is good music whether you wear a mask or wear hipster glasses that don't help you see.
5) Your afternoon show on 98 Rock is called the Happy Hour With Potter. Why is it so happy?
We're all wasted. Guests, musicians, interns, one of the llamas. Just kidding, it's just when Happy Hour is. Thought it fit. :)
6) Let's talk about the music on 98 Rock. Charleston is a unique and historical city. Does this influence the music you play on your station at all?
We're a pretty progressive city, but we're also in the south. Basically, we still play Drivin' n Cryin', but have no issues with Canadians.
7) What's your take on current Rock music and the Active Rock format overall?
There are incredible Active Rock bands out there. Unfortunately, the idea of Active Rock took a hit over the past couple of years, so we just keep on fighting the good fight, and the people in this town dig it! I mean, Jesus, Metallica has new stuff out, and it's great. If you don't like it, that's on you.
8) What are your three favorite Active Rock tunes so far this year?
- Highway Tune - Greta Van Fleet
- Show Yourself - Mastodon
- Little One - Highly Suspect
9) What's the best live band you've seen so far this year and why?
Red Sun Rising was flippin' amazing at our Spring show.
10) Finally, what do you like to do to relax when you're not fully in radio mode?
My kids and I like to throw things at old people downtown. Once again … just kidding. Soccer and swim team keep us pretty busy. That's what we do. ;)
