All Access Exclusive - 10 Questions with Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach
March 16, 2021
Have an opinion? Add your comment below. Geatest Hits Vol. 2 - The Better Noise years is a collection of songs that we as a band feel really connected to the past 10 years moving from a major label to the indie world and we loved that. Our songs are like children to us so it was difficult to narrow down the selection but we added some new remixes and a great feature from Asking Alexandria vocalist, Danny Worsnop, that ‘elevated’ this second Hits collection.

Left to Right- Jerry Horton – lead guitar, Tony Palermo – drums, Toby Esperance- bass and Jacoby Shaddix-vocals1. Where does this interview find the band right now?
We’re currently in the process of putting the finishing touches on the next PRoach album at the moment while celebrating the last 10 years with our second Greatest Hits – Out 3/19!!! Let’s goooooo!
2. Let’s start at the beginning. I know the band has been around since 1993. Give us the scoop on where and how the band formed?
The band formed back in the early 90’s in Vacaville, CA when I met our former drummer, Dave Buckner, on our H.S. football field. From there we recruited Jerry Horton on guitar and shortly then after added Tobin Esperance, who replaced me on Bass after a couple line-up changes to round out the classic line-up.
3. Who came up with the name Papa Roach and what is the origin of the name?
The name came from my step-grandfather, Howard William Roatch, a legend, who went by the nickname ‘Papa Roatch’ and the rest is history.
4. What bands or artists have inspired you and you’d list as major influences from the start and even up until today?
We’ve always been into 90’s West Coast hip hop - Dr. Dre, Warren G, Spice 1 etc blended with rock artists - Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine and Primus.
5. Now let’s talk about the re-working of your monster hit “Last Resort” 20 years after its original release. “Last Resort (Reloaded)” has really exploded and features Jeris Johnson. How did this collaboration come about?
We actually discovered Jeris on TikTok after he posted a remix of his own version saying “what if I could get Papa Roach on this track” and the next thing you know we invited him to a studio session and we cut it up and Reloaded was born. Been a ride so far!
6. You also are releasing “Greatest Hits Vol. 2- The Better Noise Years” on March 19th. When can you tell us about it?
It’s a collection of songs that we as a band feel really connected to the past 10 years moving from a major label to the indie world and we loved that. Our songs are like children to us so it was difficult to narrow down the selection but we added some new remixes and a great feature from Asking Alexandria vocalist, Danny Worsnop, that ‘elevated’ this second Hits collection.
7. Papa Roach has had great success at Rock radio for many years. What’s your take on Rock Radio and do you have any choice Radio moments you can share?
Rock radio has always been good to us and we’re really grateful for all the support through the years. Rock radio is still supporting young talent and we are the same…giving a leg up to young talent. It’s tough to pick just one moment because each one has been such a blessing. Playing St. Louis at _______Fest was something that we always looked forward to.
8. With the state of the world during the Coronavirus pandemic over the last year, tours have been put on the back burner for the time being. What are your future tour plans (including virtual) at this point?
We have done virtual last year celebrating the 20th Anniversary of INFEST. We would like to do a couple more this year as we see what multi-artist packages we can put together – Korn, Deftones – what you say??? There’s plenty of PRoach yet to come in 2021. You know Papa Roach is gonna bring it every time.
9. I know Papa Roach loves to play live and there’s a definite difference between making a record and going out and playing it live in front of an audience. Many feel that the real work is making the record, and the fun part is playing it live. What’s your take on both of these processes?
Man, I’ll tell you what – both are integral in what we do. Making a good record takes time, patience and authenticity to perfect which is what we’re all about – the live component lets us tell the story to the live audience which is fun, dynamic every night and therapeutic all at the same time. We miss that feeling every day.
10. Finally, what do you and other members of your band like to do for fun (hobbies etc.) when you’re not in “Rock Band” mode?
This forced break has allowed us all to spend some much-needed time with our families and that alone has been great. I personally have been doing a lot of personal introspection on myself, running, eating better, taking my kids to school, and just getting my mind right to recharge my batteries and be patient for the time when we can go back to touring. I think as a unit we’re all grateful for the break and this has given Papa Roach the opportunity to focus on new music, video content and how we want to project our band, but I can assure you that we are so amped to get back out on stage and TEAR IT THE FUCK UP!
