10 Questions with ... Rob Goldklang & David Ravikoff

1. What made you want to get into the music business and who were some of your early mentors?
David: During my college days, I was heavily involved with the student radio station WRGW, eventually becoming the Music Director. At the same time, I interned at places like DC101, 9:30 Club, and Elektra Records. By the time I graduated in 2001, the music business felt like the place to be! Early mentors include Tyson Haller, Mike DePippa, and Keith Jenkins …all three were my bosses at Elektra while I was their DC College Rep from 1999-2001.
2. Can you give us a rundown of the record labels and positions you’ve held over the years up to now?
Rob: Warner Records, 25+ years! Prior to that, I worked at the World Famous KROQ and Hollywood Basic Records.
David: Warner Records, 15+ years! Prior to that, I worked at Universal Motown Records, TVT Records, and Elektra as a college rep.
3. Warner Records has been on fire with lots of great Rock projects on the charts. Let’s start with the recent #1 Rock single “Won’t Stand Down” from Muse. What’s coming next from Muse?
Rob: we’re very excited for Muse’s new album “Will Of The People, which is out Aug 26th, with a full tour coming next year!
4. You also have the Top 10 single from Red Hot Chili Peppers “Black Summer” which is racing toward #1. What’s the latest update on this artist and song?
David: “Black Summer” hit #1 at Rock and stuck there for multiple weeks. We are now setting the next single “These Are The Ways” which will impact June 7th. The band also kicks off their Global Stadium Tour this summer!
5. And then there’s The Black Keys single “Wild Child” which is also in the Top 10 on the Rock Charts. What’s the latest with this project?
Rob: Black Keys is on fire with the release of their new album “Dropout Boogie” as we start to head towards the Top 5 at Rock Radio. “Wild Child” also hit #1 at Alternative and Triple A and stayed there for multiple weeks. All around, one of the biggest launches of the band’s career!
6. Now let’s switch over to the latest from Mastodon “Peace And Tranquility.” What’s going on with this project?
David: Mastodon is currently Top 30 at Rock Radio and picking up new adds every week! We just wrapped up a co-headline tour w/ Opeth and are looking forward to a massive arena tour w/ GHOST later this summer.
7. And then there’s the new My Chemical Romance single “The Foundations Of Decay” which was recently released. What’s the latest with this project?
Rob: It’s been amazing how Rock Radio has taken on the EVENT of a new My Chemical Romance record! #1 Most Added at Rock on impact, and super excited about the band’s Sold-Out Tour this Fall.
8. What other new Warner Records Rock projects should we be looking for in the future?
David: We will have a brand-new project from Rock-All-Stars DISTURBED this year and stayed tuned for new music from AVENGED SEVENFOLD, both tbd!
9. Finally, with all these Rock projects on your plate, I know you need your downtime from Promotion. What do you like to do for fun/relaxation when you’re not in “work” mode?
Rob: live music, hiking, & gardening! Call me Dr. Greenthumb!

David: theater, movies/tv & art museums. I’m much more cultured than Rob.
