1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
My first (and only) job in radio was right here at Lotus Broadcasting. I would work the graveyard shift every weekend, run the board for a Baptist preacher every Sunday, and I also ran drugs across the border ... ya know, intern-type stuff. I've only had one radio influence and her name was Cara West. She taught me everything I know about radio and taxidermy.
2) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now, what you didn't then, would you still do it?
Absolutely, no doubt about it.
3) What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
Stand-up comedy or being homeless.
4) What is the biggest change that you'd like to see happen in the business?
I would like to see on-air personalities get free hot lunches every Tuesday.
5) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff?
Cara West. She was brilliant when she was on the air. I was never a fan of radio until I heard her silly ass.
6) What's your take on current music? Is it as good as six months ago, better, or about the same?
Few songs I like, but for the most part, the new music smells like poop. There is no originality anymore. I think it's because the record industry only signs bands based on their look, when they should be listening to what the music has to say.
7) What was the biggest gaffe you've made on air?
Dead air, mike still on, swearing, murder ... You name it, I've done it.
8) What is the most rewarding promotion or activity your station has ever been involved with to benefit the community or a charity?
We used to do a radio-a-thon for the MDA where we would play any song you wanted for a charity donation. It was always a long day, but it was a fulfilling day.
9) Of all the skills you have gained through the years, is there an area you'd like to improve?
I wish I could dribble a basketball with my left -- and I would like to improve my interviewing skills
10) How do you keep tabs on the competition? When your competition attacks you on the air, how do you react?
I don't pay attention to my competition. If they bring my name up over their air, then hooray for me.
Bonus Questions
What approach do you take after a soft book?
Don't panic and blame the Amish.
Who would be your dream guest on the show?
Dave Chappelle
Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Punching a goat
What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
There is not a lot of attractive listeners.
