1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences? Weekend jock on Rock 95.1
KDJK. I kinda walked straight to an on-air gig from college radio. My earliest influence was a morning show on 104.1 in Modesto when they were a Top 40 station. They used to let listeners come in the studio and watch the show live, which I would do often in jr. high.
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment that made you realize "this is it"?
Probably the first time I saw that morning show on 104.1. Up until that time, I was just curious about radio, but when I witnessed everything I knew I had to do it.
3) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now what you didn't then, would you still do it?
Maybe not the same way I have done it to this point. Things seem to have worked out so far, but I would have done a few things different.
4) What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
I took a break from radio for about three years and worked in a warehouse. I have a feeling I would be doing that.
5) What format does not exist that should? Would it work?
I don't know if it exists, but I would love a station centered around everything from the '90s. I was a huge fan of hip-hop and Alternative back then, and if a station was to emerge with that format I would have to listen. But I might be the only one. I doubt it would work.
6) If you could add any one full-time position to your budget with no questions asked, what would it be?
As of right now, I would have to say my intern Will. He is my acting sidekick on my morning show and we have an awesome connection. If I could get him on payroll, I would love it.
7) What was the biggest gaffe you've made on-air?
I was voicetracking the other day; I made a few mistakes and had to redo the track. The board wasn't live and the takes didn't air ... well, not on the radio. The webcam was still on and my multiple takes went out over the web broadcast.
8) Please describe the best or worst promotion you've ever been part of?
When I first stated with Rock 96-7, we tried to do a Halloween concert out of our listening area with only local bands. We had maybe 15 people in attendance. It was embarrassing.
9) Most of us have known or even worked for a "colorful" owner/GM/air talent. Care to share a story? (The names can be changed to protect the innocent).
On a weekend (when typically no one is was in the building), I had the bright idea to ride my bike down the hall. I had no idea our new GM was getting acquainted with his new office. He walked into the hall and my handlebars. We didn't really get along after that.
10) In today's world of multi-tasking and wearing many hats, how do you find time to show prep and what sources do you use?
I just jump online and try to find something interesting. I mostly draw from silly things I have done in my past. If I find out a celebrity has done something stupid, I will only use it if it can be personalized.
Bonus Questions
Who would be your dream guest on the show?
Gary Busey. I don't think that needs an explanation. If I couldn't get him I would take Dana White, President of the UFC.
You're stuck on a deserted island and you get to pick one artist to be stuck with you. Who would it be and don't limit it to our format?
Ted Nugent. Mainly because he could probably find us food and shelter better than anyone else.
How much time do you spend surfing the net?
Most of the morning. Gotta get what's current. I hate getting off the air and finding out something huge was posted an hour before I got off.
