BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Feb 2001-present - PD, KIOZ
July 1996-Feb 2001 - Promotion and Marketing Dir., 91X, Channel 933 and KIOZ.
July 1994-July 1996 - Promotion Dir., KBPI Denver1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
I was the receptionist at KAZY.
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment that made you realize "this is it"?
I knew I wanted to do something in the music industry, but wasn't sure what or how to go about it. When I went to college, I took a few courses in Broadcast Communications and enjoyed it. I did my first internship in promotions at a station in Denver and was hooked from that point on.
3) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now what you didn't then, would you still do it?
Absolutely! I feel very fortunate to have had a career this long in radio. This job can make you experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows; every day is different and that is what I love about it ... you never know what you are going to get!
4) What makes your station or market unique? How does this compare to other markets or stations you have worked at?
The staff at this station is what makes it unique. From sales to promotions to on-air, we have all been together for a really long time. We have been through a lot together between 9/11 and handling that on-air, to the fires here in San Diego (twice!) and handling that on-air ... there is such a sense of camaraderie. We've been to each other's weddings, been there for each other when kids were born ... it's been a really great station to be a part of. I have to say this, too: Even though it's been awhile since his departure, but if it weren't for the staff at KIOZ both on-air and off-air, this station may have wound up like many Rock stations when we lost Howard Stern. Many, as everybody knows, went away. Rock stayed strong. We rallied the troops, had the belief from our sales department and kicked ass after his departure. I'm so proud of everyone that believed in this station and got excited about the change. The end result was continuously being the #1 Rock station in San Diego.
5) What can we be doing with our station websites to better our stations as a whole?
This is an area that we are fortunate to have really grown in both as a station and as a company. Everybody knows the cliché that this is the extension of your station. But what are you doing about it other than saying it? Right now, we are doing a lot on www.rock1053.com. But that still is MINIMAL compared to what we will be doing in the future. This is an exciting area with so much potential and growth;this is the future for us as PDs.
6) What is your favorite radio station outside of the market and why?
KTCL in Denver. I have always enjoyed that station.
7) What's the best concert you've been to so far this year and why?
This may be the first year in memory that I haven't been to a concert because I had a baby this year. We did go take him to see Disney Playhouse Live ... and that rocked. I knew all the words to the songs!
8) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Be nice to everyone that you work with, from the GM down to the new intern. You never know who you'll be working for one day.
9) Please describe the best or worst promotion you've ever been part of?
The worst promotion I have ever been a part of occurred when I was a Promotion As/t at KAZY/Denver. There had been a really high rate of shootings in Denver in the early '90s and the band Great White had heard about it. They were playing in town and donated 100 guitars for a promotion "Guitars for Guns" ... you see where this is going, right?
Well, we had set up at a Police Station in Denver -- I believe the band joined us -- and the idea was you turn in a gun (no questions asked) and you get an autographed guitar. We hadn't even got to the location to set up yet, and there HUNDREDS of people in line with every type of gun imaginable. We only had a hundred guitars. I'm not even sure if the band showed up because they had heard about all the chaos. Nothing like telling a crowd of angry, gun-toting, fans that not everyone is going to get a guitar. I'm lucky to be alive today.
10) Most of us have known or even worked for a "colorful" owner/GM/air talent. Care to share a story? (The names can be changed to protect the innocent).
Randy Michaels, strip club, tow yard, Dukes of Hazzard. That's all I'm saying.
