1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
WLSO, the student station at Lake Superior State University. As for early influences,
I was mostly influenced by the RA Supervisor who got me kicked off the station for saying some unflattering (though completely true) things about the way he handled the student dorms.
2) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now what you didn't then, would you still do it?
Absolutely, at this point I could never ever go back and work a real job. Never.
3) What can we be doing with our station websites to better our stations as a whole?
Everything. As the 'Net is integrated into everything from phones to cars, we have to make sure that the website is an all-purpose service center for your station. EVERYTHING that the station does needs to be represented on your website.
4) How is the relationship between programmer and record label changing? For better or worse?
I think that available time for relationship building has decreased but the nature of programming/rep relationships remains the same.
5) Besides your own, what is your favorite radio format?
Sports Talk. I'm a complete sports junkie.
6) What's the best concert you've been to so far this year, and why?
This year is awfully young, but KLQ has had a great success with our local music showcase, "The KLQ Heavyweight Championship," and it's been a lot of fun to watch some real talented bands from right here in West Michigan.
7) What is the most rewarding promotion or activity your station has ever been involved with to benefit the community or a charity?
KLQ has been involved with several benefits for our servicemen and women overseas (most recently "Sounds From Home" that sent cases of CDs to the troops for the holiday season), and that is something that I will never tire of. Having both friends and family in the military, it's a cause very near and dear to me.
8) How are you using new music technologies to work with the music you program on your station, in production, and in your personal life?
By the time you print my answer, the technology in question will already be obsolete.
9) Of all the skills you have gained through the years, is there an area you'd like to improve?
Every one of them.
10) What are your three favorite artists or songs of this year?
So far in 2007 I really dig "The Rising" by Trivium, "Ladies and Gentlemen" by Saliva, and "Driven" by Sevendust.
Bonus Questions
1) Who would be your dream guest on the show?
Janine Lindemulder
2) Favorite artist you have met?
Bad Religion.
3) Do you read? Everything? Books, Magazines, etc.? Nothing? What's your favorite reading material?
I read constantly -- pretty much anything that I can get my hands on.
