1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
Actually, I got my first job in radio through a prank call. I've always love calling stations just see if I could get on the air as some dumb character. One night, I called Kramer, the night guy at WFLZ at the time. He liked the call and told me to come in and answer phones. 6 months later we were doing nights in a top 5 market and now we've had a ten year partnership.
2) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now, what you didn't then, would you still do it?
Absolutely. Once it gets in your blood you're powerless to stop it. But sometimes being a little naive is good, you don't think about the consequences of what you are doing so much, so you are pretty fearless on the air, which is a blast! (but if you've been in as much trouble as me, maybe that's a good thing)
3) How have the recent FCC regulations impacted the way you program your music and the station's dialogue on the air? What are your feelings about these recent changes?
The show is a lot more listener-friendly now, and more topic driven, which has been great for our people numbers. The only drawback of the regulations is that YOU DON"T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE! No one can tell you what you can't say until you've already said it.
4) Where do you see the industry and yourself five years from now?
If things stay at the same pace they are now , doing the same show, but in multiple markets.
5) What is your favorite radio station outside of the market and why?
I will always have a soft spot for FLZ in Tampa. That's the station that made me want to get into radio. They are still one of the best CHR's in the country, and The Edge in Dallas is still a damn good ALT.
6) What was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you at a remote?
Back in the day, I was doing a break from on stage at a bar in Dallas when I was on the Eagle. This chick in the crowd shoved her hands down my pants (I was a little drunk) and pinched my little buddy with her fingernails (Swear to God). I wailed like a shot dog. Weren't expecting that, were you!
7) What led to your station's recent ratings increase?
Just being ourselves on the air. Me and MJ have a great on-air chemistry, and sometimes, you just have to let that go where it wants. You don't always know where a break will go, but if you have the right team, and you can really entertain each other, you've got 99% of the battle won.
8) Most of us have known or even worked for a "colorful" owner/GM/air talent. Care to share a story?
An unnamed person once brought in a bag of hair he collected from his home shower drain to see if people around the office thought it matched his wife's hair, because he was convinced she was cheating! That was the oddest thing I have ever been a part of.
9) What are your three favorite artists or songs of this year?
Seether, Hinder, and The Foo Fighters latest disc … that one is amazing
10) As you look back over your career ... any regrets? Missed opportunities?
Yeah, I wish I bought Google when it went public!
Bonus Questions
What is your favorite TV show?
Right now it's House on Fox, and I have no idea why.
Favorite artist you have met?
Pantera, hands down. We got to become friends when I lived in Dallas, and they are the nicest dudes a guy could know. Dimebag is missed very much!
You're stuck on a deserted island and you get to pick one artist to be stuck with you. Who would it be and don't limit it to our format?
No question: Shakira. Do I need to explain why?
